  9. 1946~intro to government • Juan Perón became the government candidate in the February 1946 presidential election. • Following Perón's election, Eva began to play a very important role in politics. During the early months of the Perón supervision she launched an active campaign for national women's suffrage, which had been one of Perón's campaign promises. • Due largely to her efforts, suffrage for women became law in 1947, and in 1951 women voted for the first time. Eva also did the task of gathering the support of the working classes and controlling organized labor groups. Taking over a suite of offices in the Secretariate of Labor, Perón's former center of power, she used her influence to hire and fire ministers and top officials of the General Confederation of Labor, the chief labor organization in Argentina. 11. 1951~vice president option • In 1951, Eva tried to get her name on the ballot for a canidate for vice-president. This move angered many military leaders who despised Eva and her increasing powers within the government. • According to the Argentine Constitution, the Vice President automatically succeeds the President in the event of the President's death. The possibility of Eva becoming president in the event of Juan Perón's death was not something the military could accept. She did, however, receive great support from the working class, the unions, and the Peronist Women's Party. • The intensity of the support she drew from these groups is said to have surprised even Juan Perón himself. • A few weeks later, Eva declined the option to run for vice-president.
