  1. A Practice Oriented Final Design Project for an Instrumentation Course in Civil Engineering Shawn Griffiths Ph.D. University of Wyoming Presented at the Rocky Mountain ASEE Regional Conference 5/21/19

  2. Course Motivation Course Motivation Use of instrumentation is becoming important element for many civil projects yet civil student familiarity with instrumentation is scant or non-existent Students inability to understand data and connect it to physical process or real world application Goal Designed to familiarize students with the various types of instrumentation and sensors available to them in Civil and Architectural Engineering (CAE) applications. CE 4650/5650, Application in Field Instrumentation Undergraduate/Graduate, 3 credit, 15 week course Technical elective Pre-requisite of Mechanics of Materials (stress/strain behavior) A Practice Oriented Final Design Project for an Instrumentation Course in Civil Engineering: Griffiths, 2019 RM ASEE conference Laramie, WY

  3. 1. Identify different instrumentation and choose instrumentation for specific applications 2. Deploy/Install sensors for data acquisition 3. Collect data using good scientific and bookkeeping procedures 4. Analyze data using available software 5. Interpret data to aid in decision making and understanding of measured quantities Course Objectives Course offered Fall of 2017 11 Students, 3 undergrad, 8 graduate Transportation, Geotechnical, Structural, Architectural, Petroleum A Practice Oriented Final Design Project for an Instrumentation Course in Civil Engineering: Griffiths, 2019 RM ASEE conference Laramie, WY

  4. Course Schedule Review / Big Picture / Statistics 2 x week 75 min classes Class lectures on instrumentation types, basic knowledge 2 x week 75 min classes Laboratory exercises 1 lab/week Lab length varied with lab needs 180 mins/lab Class after lab was optional and focused on analyses of data for lab report A Practice Oriented Final Design Project for an Instrumentation Course in Civil Engineering: Griffiths, 2019 RM ASEE conference Laramie, WY

  5. Course Labs Lab Report Motivation for the lab Description of test set up Describe instrument and how it works Tables and figures of data analyses A Practice Oriented Final Design Project for an Instrumentation Course in Civil Engineering: Griffiths, 2019 RM ASEE conference Laramie, WY

  6. Course Labs Labs developed by grad student (under my supervision). Lab Report Motivation for the lab Description of test set up Describe instrument and how it works Tables and figures of data analyses A Practice Oriented Final Design Project for an Instrumentation Course in Civil Engineering: Griffiths, 2019 RM ASEE conference Laramie, WY

  7. Course Evaluation Criteria of 70% was set as minimum acceptable level of competence. < 70% bad > 70% is good If < 70% met objective action was required to improve course instruction A Practice Oriented Final Design Project for an Instrumentation Course in Civil Engineering: Griffiths, 2019 RM ASEE conference Laramie, WY

  8. Final Design Project Proposed New Building Existing Tall Building Ground Surface Existing Foundation Proposed Underground Parking Excavation Support A Practice Oriented Final Design Project for an Instrumentation Course in Civil Engineering: Griffiths, 2019 RM ASEE conference Laramie, WY

  9. Final Design Project Proposed building 10 story Existing structure 2 story Original ground surface Tiltmeter Strain Gage Basement Proposed parking garage Micropile A Practice Oriented Final Design Project for an Instrumentation Course in Civil Engineering: Griffiths, 2019 RM ASEE conference Laramie, WY

  10. Objective # 4, Analyze 73% 3 8 0 Proper data analyses required: Removal of poor data Determination of initial reading Apply necessary corrections to determine engineering units Plot data to determine trends A Practice Oriented Final Design Project for an Instrumentation Course in Civil Engineering: Griffiths, 2019 RM ASEE conference Laramie, WY

  11. Objective # 5, Interpret 27% 8 3 0 A Practice Oriented Final Design Project for an Instrumentation Course in Civil Engineering: Griffiths, 2019 RM ASEE conference Laramie, WY

  12. Objectives 73% 27% A Practice Oriented Final Design Project for an Instrumentation Course in Civil Engineering: Griffiths, 2019 RM ASEE conference Laramie, WY

  13. Lessons Learned from Objectives 4 and 5 • Bringing real-world data into the classroom; • A. Kept student engagement high • B. Helped students begin to develop their “engineering judgement” • C. Gave students an good sense of the complicated nature of real-world problems • Practicing engineers have been responsive and excited to be affiliated with the University • Students ability to relate data to a real world physical situation was lacking • Solution: Future courses will incorporate interpretation of results into every assignment and a class/group discussions on the date the assignment was turned in will help reinforce important concepts A Practice Oriented Final Design Project for an Instrumentation Course in Civil Engineering: Griffiths, 2019 RM ASEE conference Laramie, WY

  14. Lessons Learned from Course Formal course evaluations not performed do to clerical error Informal evaluations Would Change 8/11 – Dedicated lab time 2/11 – More quizzes/test review over instrumentation Liked about course Interested subject matter and enjoyed to pace of the class Challenges others should be aware of 1. No civil engineering instrumentation specific text (to authors knowledge) 2. Instrumentation is multidisciplinary and significant training or co-teaching may be required 3. A lab based instrumentation course requires significant equipment purchases that may be costly Future Improvements 1. Setting up the course for a once a week 150 minute period of time 2. Incorporate an exam into the curriculum, near the end of the section I and II of the course 3. Rearrange the labs to start at the most fundamental topics near the beginning of the section A Practice Oriented Final Design Project for an Instrumentation Course in Civil Engineering: Griffiths, 2019 RM ASEE conference Laramie, WY
