Who managed and owned the banana industry? • Mainly wealthy elites of North American or European descent owned the banana export companies • Creole landowners managed and profited from this industry (see plantation slide) • Major companies include the United Fruit Company (1899), the Boston Fruit Company (1888), Dole (1851), and Chiquita (1871)

  3. Plantations • Bananas are grown on plantations in tropical areas • The working class was made up of natives and mestizos

  4. Exportation • United States • Boston • Southeast US • Bananas were popular because they were cheaper than local fruits like apples

  5. Peak Years • 1930 UFCO absorbed more than 20 rival firms • Capital of $215,000,000 • Became largest employer in Central America

  6. PRICES • Started high – at $2 per banana! • Went lower as they could be produced in bulk • Still profited since plantation workers were paid really low wages
