  1. Initiator: Martin Kuiper Ghent Univ. Activity: LSH-2003-3-6 Call: FP6-2003-LIFESCIHEALTH-II Instrument: Specific Support Action (SSA) Date of preparation: 14 April 2004 EMERALD Empowering the Microarray-Based European Research Area to Take a Lead in Development and Exploitation • Main activities suggested • Survey of European microarray community and related activities • Benchmarking and standardisation of microarray methods • Integration approaches toward developing new microarray technologies • Establishment of a European-wide Microarray User Community Astrid Lægreid, Norwegian University of Science and Technology

  2. Benchmarking and standardisation of microarray methods • Objectives: • Identification of overall needs and definition of procedures that will ensure that microarray data produced are of high quality. • Description of work • Identification of benchmarking procedures. • Overview of main sources of noise and bias • Identification of standards and quality controls for sample preparation and • processing, microarray manufacturing, sample labelling, hybridization • Specification of how the identified standards and quality controls should be • implemented on different platforms • Identify what can be learned from CATMA/CAGE, other joint microarray • initiatives, extension to other (model) organisms? • Identification and description of expert consortia • Probe repositories • Workshops (academia, research centres, industry, SMEs, etc.) • BASE (Bioarray Software Environment) • Coorperation with IRMM (Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements) Astrid Lægreid, Norwegian University of Science and Technology
