  1. Microbats vs.Megabats

  2. LEQ:What are the similarities and differences between microbats and megabats? You should be able to answer this question after watching this PowerPoint.

  3. Bat Facts • All bats are vertebrates and belong to the mammal class. • All bats can fly. • Bats do not have true wings. They have elongated finger bones with webbed skin that allow them to fly. • Bats are nocturnal. They sleep during the day and hunt for food during the night. • Bats sleep upside down. • There are two main groups of bats: microbats and megabats.

  4. Micro vs. Megaat a Glance MicroBats Megabats • Small • Eat other animals • Big ears • Small eyes • Echolocation • Large • Eat fruit • Small ears • Big eyes • No echolocation Now let’s learn more about each group.

  5. Microbats

  6. Microbats Information • Most microbats eat insects. They can also eat small mammals, amphibians, fish, or blood. • They have large ears because they use echolocation to find insects. • Many microbats have small eyes and poor eyesight because they use echolocation, not sight, to find food. • Microbats don’t fly in the rain because it interferes with their echolocation. • Most have sharp teeth. • Microbats are usually smaller than megabats.

  7. Where do they live? Microbats live on every continent in the world except for Antarctica. Why do you think microbats can’t survive on Antarctica?

  8. Physical Characteristics of Microbats Large ears Small eyes

  9. Megabats

  10. Megabats Information • Most megabats eat fruit, nectar, or pollen. • Megabats do not use echolocation to find food, so they have small ears. • Since megabats rely on sight not sound to find food, they have large eyes.

  11. Where do they live? Megabats live in the tropical areas of Asia, Africa, and Australia.

  12. Physical Characteristics of Megabats Small ears Large eyes

  13. You decide… Use what you have learned and decide if each bat is a microbator megabat. Microbat with big ears and small eyes. Microbat with big ears and small eyes. Megabat with small ears and big eyes. Megabat with small ears and big eyes. Megabat with small ears and big eyes.
