  1. What You Need to Know About Marijuana Edibles Even if most of us consume marijuana by smoking, others cannot stand smoke. The best alternative in consuming marijuana is through marijuana-infused foods, or commonly known as edibles. Edibles are growing in popularity in various states in America, including Colorado, where recreational marijuana is also sold legally. Edibles come in many different forms, including candy, cookies, trail mix, and even in coffee and soda. There are various concerns emerging because of legally selling recreational marijuana. Some are concerned of marijuana use by teenagers as they are most likely to abuse it and overdose themselves. Moreover, others are concerned by young children accidentally consuming edibles, as these look like any other candy or your regular food. We have compiled some facts you need to know about edibles: 1. Consuming edibles have longer effect on our bodies compared to smoking marijuana Cannabinoids are compounds found in marijuana that is primarily the reason why users get high. Smoking marijuana allows the cannabinoids to enter our lungs. On the contrary, consuming edibles allows the cannabinoids to enter our body through the gastrointestinal tract. As a result, edibles have a more intense effect and lasts much longer in the body. In addition, marijuana edibles take a longer time to start affecting our body— approximately 30 to 60 minutes; and the effect lasts long in our bodies, between 4 to 12 hours. Keep in mind that caution in consuming edibles is very important. Some edible products have as much as 100 milligrams of tetrahydrocannabinol or THC (active ingredient in marijuana), while others have lower dosages of 5 to 10 milligrams. 2. Risk perception is lower Just because edibles come in a form of food, users, specifically teenagers see it as less risky to use. It is also true that the chances of getting caught using marijuana at home or at school are lesser when consuming edibles than smoking it. A recent qualitative research showed that females used edibles for the reason that using the drug in this manner made them appear less likely as a “marijuana user”. 3. Dosing and knowing your limits Certain dosage limits are set, and this varies from state to state. For one, Colorado and Washington set a limit of 10 milligram of THC per serving. On the other hand, Oregon and Alaska set the limit to 5 milligrams. These limitations are set in order to ensure that users will be able to self-regulate what they ingest. Be cautious in taking edibles, and keep in mind that a single chocolate bar may contain as much as 100 milligrams of THC. So what is the risk when of marijuana overdose? Some of the most common effects of marijuana overdose are lack of coordination, paranoia, and hallucinations.

  2. The best way to prevent overdose is to know your limits. Although, it might be hard at first, you should be able to determine how much your body needs. In using edibles, it is best to wait at least an hour, and see the effects.
