Part of Speech : Form Classes. 2 nd meeting. Nouns. Nouns can be identified from their inflectional morphemes(-s pl,-s ps) and derivational morphemes. Any words that can be in plural form (using –s pl) and noun possessive form (using –s ps) are considered as nouns

  2. Nouns Nouns can be identified from their inflectional morphemes(-s pl,-s ps) and derivational morphemes. Any words that can be in plural form (using –s pl) and noun possessive form (using –s ps) are considered as nouns Nouns can be identified from their derivational suffixes like –dom,-ness, -ance,-ion,- acy, etc. Example ; boredom, sickness, deliverance, decision, democracy.

  3. Verbs Verbs can have a maximum of five different forms; Stem: rise Present 3rd person singular: rises Present Participle: rising Past Tense: rose Past Participle: risen Verbs also can be identified from their derivational suffixes like, -e, -ify,-, ize,-en, etc Example: bathe, beautify, colonize, ripen

  4. Adjectives Most adjectives can be identified with their inflectional suffixes (-er, -est / using more or most) Example; lazy-lazier-laziest beautiful, more beautiful, most beautiful Adjectives can also be identified from their derivational suffixes like; -ish,-y,-ar,-al,-ly, etc. Example ; childish, cloudy, consular, cultural, friendly

  5. Adverbs • Adverbs has four suffixes to set it apart from the other form classes – the derivational suffixes –ly,-wise,-ward,and –s – and the free form like. example : fortunately, clockwise, northward, nights, studentlike
