Earthquakes. Where Do They Occur ?. We Know where they occur, mainly on the Earth’s Plate Boundaries. Why do They Occur?. As the Plates rub past each other the pressure builds up. Then all of a sudden it is released. How Do We Measure an Earthquake? . We use the Richter Scale.

  2. Where Do They Occur? We Know where they occur, mainly on the Earth’s Plate Boundaries.

  3. Why do They Occur? • As the Plates rub past each other the pressure builds up. • Then all of a sudden it is released.

  4. How Do We Measure an Earthquake? We use the Richter Scale. This tells us how strong it was - 1 being weak and 10 being absolute devastation.

  5. How are earthquakes recorded? Earthquakes are recorded on a seismograph. The print out tells us how powerful the earthquake was and how long it lasted.

  6. What Happens in an Earthquake?

  7. This has Happened in Japan. Japan is located on a PLATE BOUNDARY. The Pacific Plate is being pushed under the Eurasion Plate. This causes a DESTRUCTIVE Plate Boundary.

  8. January, 1995, Kobe, Japan... What happened… • 7.2 on the Richter Scale. • 5000 people died • 25 000 injured • 56 000 buildings needed re-building.
