Prologue Post-It Setting: Olympus & Troy Main Characters: Peleus (mighty hero & groom) Thetis (most beautiful naiad & bride) Eris (lady of discord) Hera (Queen of Gods) Athene (Goddess of Wisdom) Aphrodite (Goddess of Love) Paris (shepherd boy & secret son of King Priam) Helen (beautiful & ALREADY MARRIED) Ulysses (smarty pants- oath & Trojan horse) Conflict: Eris is mad at not being invited to wedding & plays a trick A long war is had over Helen Poseidon is MAD!!!!! Important Information: Wedding Battle of troy

3. Prologue • 2 god get married on Mount Olympus, Eris, the god of discord, is not invited • Her brother is Ares the god of war (it helps to know someone) • Eris brings a golden apple and says to the fairest • Hera, queen of the gods- Aphrodite, goddess of love- and Athena, goddess of wisdom try to claim the apple as theirs • Paris, son of King Priam decides who gets it (lives in Troy)

4. Prologue • Hera offers him power • Athena offers him wisdom • Aphrodite goes and whispers into Paris ear something and he immediately gives her the apple, she offered him any girl he desires • He chooses Helen (who is already married) to King Menelaus of Greece

5. King Menelaus + Helen = LOVE/Marriage (in Sparta) Here comes Paris……..(he steals her) Paris + Helen = LOVE/Marriage (in Troy) King Menelaus calls on Ulysses & 1,000 kings of the oath for a battle!

6. Oath: All Helen’s original suitors would swear a mighty oath to refrain from murdering the successful suitor and would join to defend Helen and her husband if there would be any attack

7. Journal: 7 sentences • Explain how the war started with an apple, ended with a horse, and was fought by a thousand kings for the love of a single woman.

8. Ships and Men • 3 ships x 50 men 150 men • Fleet= group of ships • Description of ships: problem- lack of cargo space (storage) “few days” food/ water/ treasure/ loot/ booty

9. Ciconians • Travel to Ciconians low on food and water its been a few days since the stores had been filled • They see an unguarded place with cattle • After they have attacked and are eating the cattle the Ciconians skilled marksmen catch them off guard • Killed 18 of Ulysses men • Boats are in bad shape so they have to empty some treasures to lose weight • Mermaids come up attracted to the treasures

10. Ciconians • Poseidon sees this and think Ulysses is trying to attract his mermaids • He tells his son Aeolus, god of wind, to blow them off course to Africa

11. The Lotus Eaters • Libya: the land where Morpheus plays • Morpheus- son of Hypnos, god of sleep • Morpheus flies around at night and spreads sleep and dreams- spreads a little death, prepares people for real death- spreads bright pictures= dreams • Persephone (Aunt)- says to Morpheus you really give rest. Morpheus says he needs a flower to put people to sleep • Ulysses men are tired and hungry they land in Libya and immediately fall asleep

12. The Lotus Eaters • Wall they are sleeping the Lotus Eaters spread a bunch of flowers around them • When they wake up they eat them and fall asleep again • Morpheus realizes they are having bad dreams and changes the for everyone except Ulysses

13. The Cyclops Cave • Polyphemus= head Cyclops- red eye • Waits for sailors • Sailors smell goats cooking on a spit Ulysses tries to stop men from going in cave • Polyphemus kills two ( Yum!) • Ulysses gives Polyphemus wine to stop him from eating another man, Ulysses calls himself nobody • Ulysses heats his sword and blinds him • They ride underneath giant goats

14. The Cyclops Cave • Polyphemus gets his Cyclops friends • Ulysses screams to Polyphemus that his real name is Ulysses • Polyphemus chases them into water and throws a boulder at the ship (kills 7) • Polyphemus prays to Poseidon for storms, ship wrecks, sorceries so it takes Ulysses long to get home and when he does to return a stranger

15. Keeper of the Winds • Aeolus- keeper of the winds, likes eat/ drink/ fight/ games/ stories • Penelope- Ulysses wife • Telemachus- Ulysses son • Ulysses has been at sea for 3 day when he comes upon a giant bronze wall/ gate • Comes to castle and is greeted by Aeolus. Ulysses tell him the story of his journey • Aeolus likes Ulysses (in a non-gay way)

16. Keeper of the Winds • Aeolus takes Ulysses to a mountain and pierces it with a sword, Aeolus captures the wind and puts it in a bag (N,S,E) he also gives Ulysses a steady westward wind to get him home • Ulysses stays up 9 days and 9 nights guarding the bag • Sees home and decides to rest • Poseidon makes a coin noise • 2 men think that the bag is full of coins, the men cut open the bag • Winds are released and the crew is sent flying back to Aeolus

17. Cannibal Beach • 6 days on sea after leaving Island of the Wind • Purple blue sky, orange bars of fire • Left one ship in the ocean and beached the other two= quick get away • Split into groups (built fire, cooked, fixed ships) and some were asked to go up a tree to look out • One man goes= no return • Another man goes= no return • Third man goes= no return

18. Cannibal Beach • Ulysses decides to go and realizes the bark looks unlike any other tree bark • As he goes up and sees a bird and notices it’s a giant! • Ulysses tries to retreat • Giants eat lots of men • Only 1 ship sails away • Only 1 crew 45 men are left! • Rest of men are in the giants bellies!

19. Circe • 45 men • Northwards- no food- have to stop • Ulysses decides to go 1st! LEADERSHIP! • Smoke catches his eye- through trees, hears howling and sees a white deer and kills it • Ulysses (leadership) carries it back to the men • Men eat- yum- venison • Ulysses lets Eurylochus take 22 men to explore • Comes across animals in courtyard (lions and wolves) nice animals with weird eyes

20. Circe • Eurylochus urges men to go into the castle while he keeps watch outside • Men eat like pigs and are turned into pigs • Eurylochus goes back to Ulysses lets him know, Ulysses goes to the castle • Hermes- messenger god, gives him flower (Moly) it gives him powers towards Circes spells • Circe makes deal to turn the men back to humans and that she wont harm them

21. Circe • Ulysses and Circe are man and wife • Circe explains she turns her husband into animals when they are about to die (Ulysses would be a fox) • After a long time she asks him to stay permanently and live forever… Ulysses declines • Circe informs Ulysses that he has to go to the Land of the Dead in order to get home according to the gods wishes

22. Land of the Dead • Thought earth was flat- sailed west and over the edge of the world and you would go to the underworld • Ulysses sends Elphenor up to crows nest and Elphenor ends up falling off • Men suspicious Ulysses pushed him • Dark- black river- Styx • Cut goats throats so ghost would come and drink blood • Anticlea- Ulysses mom/ Achillies- Sirens

23. Land of the Dead • Ajax tells about Penelope being chased by suitors • Elphenor- Scylla (6 men) and Charybdis (whirl pool, will destroy the full ship) steer clear of them • Elphenor- will haunt Ulysses if he doesn’t build him a grave • Teiresias- golden cattle of the Sun Titan- DO NOT steal one beef, if you do you will never get home

24. Wandering Rocks • Ulysses wants to go around the Land of the Sirens (around danger) • After Ulysses thinks about he realizes the men from the under word (Ajax, Achillies, Elpenot) aren’t smart and gave him the wrong directions • Ulysses hears weird noises and thinks it dolphins, whales ect. When he gets close enough he realizes they are rocks • They make him change direction and follow him to Sicily S>N

25. The Sirens • Ulysses puts wax in sailors ears • Has himself tied to the mast • Men are warned • They get closer and Ulysses hears the singing • He gets looses but the men catch him before he goes overboard • Ulysses is retied with medal • As they get closer Ulysses and men can see the Siren sisters

26. The Sirens • Sirens= huge birds, feathers instead of hair, with the face of a young girl • Ulysses had to close his eyes when he looked at them but when he did their singing made him want to jump overboard • Sirens sat on bones of dead sailors (bones are used to make musical instruments • Ulysses final sailed out of ear shot and he could be untied • Headed toward Scylla and Charybdis

27. Scylla and Charybdis • Charybdis lives beneath the left hand rock • She used to be a naiad daughter of Poseidon and was in charge of the tides • Zeus got angry that she was helping Poseidon win the land and turned her into a monster • Drink 3x a day- swallowing the water and spitting it back out (whirlpool) • Scylla right hand rock • Scylla was also a naiad. Poseidon was in love with her beauty and Poseidon’s wife (Amphitrite) made her into an ugly female monster

28. Scylla and Charybdis • She looked like a fleshy spider, 12 legs and 6 heads • Ulysses knew he couldn’t swerve even a foot off course • Oars wider than boat (Ulysses forgot this) and Scylla pulled the oars and the boat toward her • See ya 6 men! • Made it out- Isle of the Sun Titan ahead

29. The Cattle of the Sun • Ulysses puts anchor down to Peremedies and Eurylochus ( 2 are responsible for the sun cattle) • Hyperion- Sun Titan • Go to shore- get off boat- Ulysses sends people to do jobs • Try to find game, others to get water, some use tar to fix boats • Couldn’t find any food • Ulysses stays awake so men don’t eat cattle

30. The Cattle of the Sun • Strong south wind (stuck for 30 days and 30 nights) • Eurylochus waits tell Ulysses is asleep and tells men the worst way to die is of starvation and talks them into killing the cattle (6) • Ulysses wakes up to the smell of meet cooking • Gets made at Eurylochus but he swears that the meet is from deer on the island and convinces Ulysses to eat • Made offerings of these cows • Cows come to life; mooing, groaning, and crawling towards Ulysses

31. The Cattle of the Sun • Eurylochus admits it and says “Hey look! The winds have changed so lets leave!” • Wild west wind took them out to sea and lightening struck, yellow smoke, mast on fire, men jumped overboard… everyone except Ulysses! • Ship destroyed and Ulysses is on a raft, he gets pulled back to Scylla and Charybdis • Ulysses waits tell Charybdis sucks in water and he jumps and holds onto plants on a rock while his raft was sucked in and after hours it was spit back out

32. The Cattle of the Sun • Ulysses knew he had time before the next drink was taken and he paddled out that little raft out of there • 9 days in the burning sun… tried to fish (no luck), so he played dead and waited till gulls to peck out his eyes and grabbed them, twisted their necks and drank their blood and ate them • After 10 days Ulysses arrives on a new island

33. Calypso • Ulysses wakes and is in the shade with sweet smelling grass and pretty flowers • Elysian fields: good part of the Land of the Dead • Ulysses wakes up and sees a really tall women- short tunic that was yellow and purple, and yellow hair • In Ogygia • Ulysses goes back to bed (grotto and has grapevine curtains) • Calypso tells Ulysses the story of how he arrived on the island

34. Calypso • Ulysses is on the raft and he fell off. Calypso turns him into a fish so the sharks wont eat him • She catches him and turns him back to a human • Calypso is the daughter of Atlas (Titan) and can see all of the be fore's and after's (past and future) • She sees the future by poking around the fireplace • Shows Ulysses Penelope’s suitors that are trying to win her love • LONG time passes and Ulysses is having fun being outside and looking at pictures in the fireplace (but Calypso also turns men into animals, birds)

35. Calypso • Bird comes to see Ulysses and he forces this bird to fly to Ithaca and to give him a report • Penelope assumes Ulysses is dead and men are trying to be her husband • Shroud- 3 years • Ulysses thinks it will be easy to leave • Ulysses makes an offering- he is permitted to make a raft and have food and water. He leaves

36. Ino’s Veil • Ulysses is on a raft/ boat • Poseidon makes a storm and destroys the raft • Ino (Nereid) who hated Poseidon gave Ulysses her veil • Allows him to swim like a fish without being able to drown • 2 days he swam to Phaeacia and couldn’t get to shore because it was to rocky • Thrown into rocks (all bloody) hadn't eaten for 2 days • Found a river • Swam up the river, come a shore and collapsed

37. Nausicaa • Athena comes to Nausicaa in a vision and tells her to bathe her clothes in the river before her wedding • Hanging out with pals at the river she sees Ulysses naked • Ulysses is bathed in oils and then goes to the castle • Her dad is worn by oracle of sailors • Mom talks to him • Dad wants to kill him • Games in backyard- Ulysses throws a chariot wheel

38. Nausicaa • Nausicaa rings about Ulysses tales • Ulysses tells her dad who he is and then was praised • Athena drugged Poseidon so that the seas were calm and Ulysses starts sailing back

39. The Return • Ulysses is home after 20 years! • Wants to regain his throne • Eumaeus- swineherd • Ulysses was a feeble old beggar • Ulysses lies to Eumaeus about being from Crete • Eumaeus talks about Ulysses’ son Telemachus • Telemachus has gone out to look for Ulysses and is heading home when angry suitors are going to get him • Athena makes a deal with Poseidon

40. The Return • Athena turns herself into a herder and leads Telemachus to Eumaeus and Ulysses • Telemachus and Ulysses create a plan • Ulysses goes to the palace in the morning • Ulysses is recognized by Argo (dog) – 21 years old, blind, deaf • Ulysses meets the suitors to size them up • He meets with Penelope and tells her stories but does not reveal his true identity • Fights

41. The Return • Decides that who ever can bend Ulysses’ bow and win the archery contest can be Penelope's husband • Ulysses is the only one who can • Huge fight- Ulysses kills a lot of people • Promises Telemachus that he will teach him everything
