How do I use it? • Introduce it through Caligari and through the idea of püppe– a word meaning both puppet and dummy • Caligari controls Cesare like a marionette (sticks); he controls him to kill • A puppet has no control over his actions • Soldiers in the trenches had no control over their lives; they were forced to kill or be executed • This lack of control in the Great War is mimicked in expressionist films; Caligari provides an excellent example of this…

Other instances • In Nosferatu – Knock (and to a lesser extent: Hutter) are manipulated and controlled by Orlock with the promise of money (first scene where Knock tells Hutter it will cost him a little blood)… • In Metropolis – the expendability of the workforce in the Moloch scene resembles the expendability of the soldiers in the trenches
