  1. The Moon, Tides, and Eclipses

  2. Tides

  3. What is a tide? • The rise and fall of the sea level. • Caused by the gravitational pull of the Sun and the Moon. • There are 2 high tides and 2 low tides daily.

  4. Affect of Gravity on tides- • The moon’s gravity exerts a strong pull on the Earth causes the water to bulge outward at places. • The bulges of water are high tides & non-bulges are low tides.

  5. Spring Tides- • When there is the greatest difference between high and low tides(high-highs and low-lows). • Occurs when moon is in a straight line with sun and Earth= New moon and Full moon.

  6. Neap Tides- • When there is the little difference between high and low tides(almost equal). • Occurs when moon is at 90° with sun and Earth= 1st and 3rd quarter.

  7. What is an Eclipse? When Earth or the Moon temporarily blocks the sunlight from reaching the other.

  8. Two Types of Eclipses- • Solar Eclipse- Moon comes between Sun and Earth and casts a shadow on Earth. • Lunar Eclipse- Earth comes between the Sun’s light and the moon and blocks the light from the moon.

  9. Shadows of Eclipses- • Umbra- Darkest part of a shadow. • Penumbra- lighter portion of a shadow.

  10. Solar Eclipse A solar eclipse can only occur when the moon is in its “new moon” phase.

  11. Total and Partial Solar Eclipses

  12. Total Solar Eclipse • Total- an eclipse as seen from a particular area of the earth's surface where the eclipsed body is completely hidden

  13. Bailey’s Beads • The Baily's beads effect is a feature of total solar eclipses. As the moon "grazes" by the Sun during a solar eclipse, the rugged lunar limbtopography allows beads of sunlight to shine through in some places, and not in others

  14. Bailey’s Beads

  15. Diamond Ring • The diamond ring effect is seen when only one bead is left; a shining diamond set in a bright ring around the lunar silhouette.

  16. Annular Eclipse • Annular- an eclipse of the sun in which the moon does not cover the entire disc of the sun, so that a ring of sunlight surrounds the shadow of the moon

  17. Solar Eclipse • Partial-An eclipse in which the part of the surface of a celestial object is obscured • August 21st 2017 • Next date- in Texas • October 14th 2023-Annular • April 8th 2024-Total

  18. Know 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th contact

  19. Lunar Eclipse A lunar eclipse can only occur whenthe moon is in its “full moon” phase.

  20. Lunar eclipses occur because of the moon’s tilted orbit and only occur a couple times in a year Jan. 31st 2018 Total Lunar Eclipse
