  1. Mysteries (Conversation practice)

  2. Scenario 1 – Using Modals of Speculation • Police have found an abandoned car in the mountains of British Columbia. It is almost new and in perfect condition. The tank is full of gas, and the keys are in the ignition. The car’s owner lives about 500 miles away, but she is on a cruise around the world. She has been gone for two months. • What happened?

  3. Scenario 2 • Carol James has disappeared. She and her husband Chet have been planning a trip to Bermuda. They were supposed to leave in two days. However, the airplane tickets and a carefully packed suitcase of beach clothes were left, and Carol’s car, her winter clothes, her mink coat, all of her jewelry, and all of the money in their bank account are missing. She left no note. • What do you think happened?

  4. Archeologists have found the frozen bodies of three children in a grave on top of a mountain. They were all wearing beautiful clothing and jewelry and were wrapped in nicely woven pieces of cloth. They all had serious head injuries. Test show that these children died 3000 years ago. • What do you think happened?
