  1. Proofs By: Cameron Shockley-Okeke

  2. What Are Proofs? A proof proves a statement using deductive reasoning. Proofs show how a statement is always correct. There are many types of proofs that can be used to prove statements. Even though most proofs you learn in school will be mathematical, you probably won’t come across mathematical proofs in your life. Also, you’ve probably already came across proofs, but you didn’t know it.

  3. Two Column Proofs One type of proof is the two column proof. Two column proofs are basic proofs that are mainly taught in the U.S. Two column proofs consist of two columns: the statement and the reason. The statement is on the left and it contains a proposition. The reason is on the right and contains the explanation of why the proposition connects to the previous statement and why it makes sense.

  6. How Are Proofs Used In Life? Proofs are used to prove statements that are not always mathematical. One way you use proofs without even knowing is when you decide to buy a large bag of chips or two smaller ones. First, you would see both bags of chips, one big one small. Then, you would check the prices and see which one is cheaper. Once you see that the big bag is cheaper, then you would buy that one. What you did was prove one big bag is cheaper than two small bags. Another event is when your parents stop at a red light in the left lane. They’re trying to prove that they can’t turn right in the left lane. If they’re in the right lane, then they can turn, but since they’re in the left lane, they can’t turn because it’s illegal. What they did was prove that they couldn’t turn. Stopping was the statement and illegality was the reason.
