America Withdraws KEY QUESTION - In what ways did the war change America? • 1972 Presidential Election (Vietnam War – still a major issue) • By promising peace, Nixon re-elected by a landslide • Peace Agreement • January 27th, 1973, in Paris, the U.S. and South Vietnam agreed on cease fire with North Vietnam and Viet Cong • March 29th – for the United States, the war was over. • The war continued for Vietnam; in 1975 North Vietnam launched a massive invasion of the South.

American government sent money to help the South Vietnamese, but no troops. • April 30th – Communist forces captured Saigon (renamed Ho Chi Minh City) ending the war. • Many Vietnamese fled to the United States (by 2000 there were about 1.2 million Vietnamese-Americans) • The war caused terrible destruction and suffering – more than 1.5 million Vietnamese died.

  5. - American bombing and chemical spraying caused permanent damage to farmland and forests. • Southeast Asia left highly unstable – led to further war in Cambodia

Legacy of the war at home • About 58,000 Americans died – more than 300,000 wounded • Many soldiers suffered post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) - they relived recurring flashbacks of the war • The public treated soldiers coldly • Twenty Sixth Amendment: (passed in 1971) lowered the voting age from 21 to 18 • Anyone old enough to be drafted should be allowed to vote • 1973 – the government ended the draft

Vietnam War left the United States less willing to get involved in wars. • War Powers Act: (passed in 1973) limited the president’s war making powers • President must report to congress within 48 hours if troops have been sent in situation without declaration of war. • Troops may remain no longer than 90 days unless war is declared or congress approves • Military tactics have changed – U.S. forces prefer to enter with “overwhelming force” • This is intended to limit the number of American casualties
