  1. 5th Grade U.S. History Different Native American Tribes

  2. State Standards 5.US.1.1. Students are able to differentiate the lifestyles of various Native American tribes.

  3. Native Americans of the Plains

  4. Culture The nomadic tribes survived on hunting, and the American Buffalo was their main source of food. Some tribes are described as part of the Buffalo Culture. These animals were the chief source for items which Plains Indians made from their flesh, hide and bones, such as food, cups, decorations, crafting tools, knives, and clothing. The Tribes followed seasonal grazing and migration of the buffalo. The Plains Indians lived in tipis because the were easily disassembled and allowed for better travel while following the buffalo herds.

  5. Clothing Hides from animals provided material for much of the clothing on the Plains. Plains moccasins tended to be constructed with soft hide on the vamps and tough rawhide for the soles. Men's moccasins tended to have flaps around the ankles, while women's had high tops, which could be pulled up in the winter and rolled down in the summer.Honored warriors and leaders earn the right to wear warbonnets, headdresses with feather, usually golden or bald eagle feathers.

  6. Religious Beliefs The sun dance is a religious ceremony practiced by a number of Plains Indians. The use of a traditional drum, a sacred fire, praying with a pipe, offerings, fasting, and in some cases the ceremonial piercing of skin. The use of medicines is common, story telling, passing tobacco, offering prayers, feasting, smudging, and healing ceremonies.

  7. Food Although the Plains Indians hunted other animals, such as elk or antelope, buffalo was the primary game food source. Farming was difficult, as the tribes were not in a area long enough for crops to grow. This game meat was eaten with an assortment of berries, cherries, wild greens, camas roots and wild prairie turnip.

  8. Dwellings The Plains Indians migrated frequently to follow the movements of the buffalo herds. An entire Plains Indian village could have their tepees packed up and ready to move within an hour. There were fewer trees on the Great Plains than in the Woodlands, so it was important for Plains tribes to carry their long poles with them whenever they traveled instead of trying to find new ones each time they moved. The more-sedentary tribes of the Plains such as the Hidatsa, Mandan, and Arikara used Earth lodges
