  1. During the years between 1968 and 1976 the canal system was funded and construction was completed by the District. • In 1979 the South Florida Water Management District issued an operation permit to the Reedy Creek Improvement District for the Master Drainage System constructed under the Plan of Reclamation. • The system, designed under that plan is almost identical to the system in place today.

  2. In 1990 due to the extensive development that had occurred within the District and the advancements in modeling techniques available within the engineering field, RCID chose to remodel the entire system. • The UNET model was deemed the best available technology and it’s developer, Dr. Bob Barkau modified the model to best address our system of canals and structures. • The results of this re-modeling effort showed that both the water control structures and the canal system would contain and pass the 100yr/72 hour event without breeching the canal banks. • Based on this modeling effort, in 1992, RCID requested and SFWMD issued a Conceptual Permit for the RCID Master System.

Wind • When the District was created it was given the power to develop their own Building Codes • Many of the Buildings and Rides at the Parks created some unique requirements not usually incorporated into Municipal Building Codes. • Building Codes were developed that were more stringent than most Building Codes across the country. Even in 1970 Buildings were required to withstand winds in excess of 100 miles per hour

Because of Florida’s history of being in the path of Hurricanes, wind loads were addressed in the first addition of the Building Codes • The Codes addressed many other Safety factors because of the thousands of visitors to Walt Disney World each year are not familiar with their surroundings, thus emergency alarms, lighting, exit signage, ect. required special attention.

  6. We have extensive Fire Protection and Alarm Systems throughout the District, all wired directly into our fire stations. In over 35 years we have had less the $1 Million in total losses due to structure fires.
