Exploration 1803-1806 • Lewis and Clark were assigned to explore west of the Mississippi River (Collected data about plants, people and animals) • Duration: 3 years • GOALS for Jefferson: • 1. find a land route to Pacific Ocean and strengthen claims to Oregon territory • Gather information about Native Americans

  5. Adams-Onis Treaty 1816 Between Spain and US Spain ceded Florida to the US (settled a land dispute) Spain withdrew all claims of land in the West north of the 42ns parallel.

  6. Missouri Compromise-1820 What was it about: Southern states wanted slavery allowed in the new states. Northern states disagreed! Missouri- declared a slave state Maine- declared a free state Made slavery in the Louisiana Territory north of Missouri’s southern border

  8. Indian Removal Act Before the Trail of Tears Act that stated that the president could negotiate treaties with Native Americans to relocate them to the areas west of the Mississippi River 94 treaties were signed with Native American tribes

Remember the Alamo Battle of the Alamo was an important battle in the Texas War of Independence Leaders: James Bowie, William Travis and Davy Crockett Fought against Mexican soldiers (Mexican-American war) Texans lost at the Alamo, THIS LOSS encouraged the remaining soldiers to continue fighting and eventually gained the Texan independence at the Battle of San Jacinto

  10. Trail of Tears 1838 Treaty of New Echota: Cherokee had to give up their land east of the Mississippi 1,000 mile route from Georgia to Oklahoma 4000 Native Americans died (Disease, starvation, and exposure)

  11. Oregon Trail- 1840’s Thousands of Pioneers moved to Oregon Oregon Trail- 2000 miles This trail had many resources for survival of this route

  12. 1849- Gold Rush Gold was discovered at Sutter’s Mill in California In two years, 40,000 prospectors came to California Few found gold
