  2. NJ ASK Reading Section Updates • NJ ASK 3-5 operational tests include three reading passages at each grade level. Each will be 30 minutes. • Reading passages will include literature as well as informational or “everyday” reading selections from a wide array of sources and genres. • Grade 3: -18 multiple choice -3 open ended -30 total points • Grade 4: -24 multiple choice -3 open ended -36 total points • Grade 5: -30 multiple choice -3 open ended -42 total points

Possible Multiple Choice Questions • Recognizing central idea or theme • Recognizing supporting details • Identifying characteristics of various genres (pamphlet, letter, newspaper article, how to, biography, poetry, textbooks, thesaurus, encyclopedia, drama) • Inferring purpose of information within text (example: purpose of the first paragraph is to…) • Identifying purpose for writing (writing to inform, writing to describe, writing to entertain, writing to influence or persuade) • Questioning, clarifying, predicting • Inferring word meaning from context • Inferring theme

Forming opinions about text and author’s craft • Making judgments and drawing conclusions • Identifying literary devices (alliteration, similes, metaphors, personification, assonance, hyperbole, metaphors, repetition) • Purpose of text features • Understanding sequence of events • Identifying cause/effect • Identifying problem/solution • Identifying and interpreting story elements (characters, plot, setting, problem, resolution)

  5. Strategies for Multiple Choice Reading Questions Let’s Try It!!! 1. Read all of the questions first. 2. Read the text and underline important words or parts. Take notes on the margin. 3. Reread each question and all the answer choices. 4. Cross out answers that don’t make sense. 5. Use the text to find the answer. 6. Put a box around the parts of the text where the answer is. 7. Write the question number where you found the answer.

Self-Monitoring Using NJ ASK Rubric • 4-point response - Clearly demonstrates understanding of the task, completes all requirements, and provides an insightful explanation/ opinion that links to or extends aspects of the text. • 3-point response - Demonstrates an understanding of the task, completes all requirements, and provides some explanation/ opinion using situations or ideas from the text as support. • 2-point response - May address all of the requirements, but demonstrates a partial understanding of the task, and uses text incorrectly or with limited success resulting in an inconsistent or flawed explanation. • 1-point response - Demonstrates minimal understanding of the task, does not complete the requirements, and provides only a vague reference to or no use of the text. • 0-point response - Irrelevant or off- topic.

  8. Checklist for Reading Response I put the question back into the answer. I added three pieces of evidence from the text I explained why my evidence supports my idea. I added my opinion(s) and feelings. Self Partner

Closing Goals of Test Prep • Reduce test anxiety for kids by helping them to understand what the test is for, clarifying misunderstandings, listening to their feelings • Showing them what the test looks like and what to expect • Modeling how to apply the skills you have taught all year • Teaching kids time management • Rehearsing and giving feedback on progress • Teaching kids to self-monitor
