Cues: solar energy, renewable, green energy, water heater, electricity bill Cues: passive house, energy-efficient, solar panel, roof Cues: energy saving, cut on the use of electricity

  6. Part A Lead in Task 1 Study the pictures and discuss the questions below in small groups. Use the words given below if necessary. 1. What can we benefit from the equipment in the first picture? The equipment in the picture is a solar water heater. It uses sunlight to heat water. By using more renewable solar energy and less fossil energy, we may help keep our earth green as well as cutting our electricity bill every month.

  7. Part A Lead in Task 1 Study the pictures and discuss the questions below in small groups. Use the words given below if necessary. 2. Do you know what the house in the first picture is called? What is special about it? 3. What are the advantages of U-shaped lamps in the third picture? It is a passive house, i.e., one that requires little fossil energy for heating or cooling. The devices on the roof are solar panels (太阳能电池板) which may turn sunlight into electricity. They are energy-saving lamps which provide enough light for us while cutting down on the use of electricity.

  10. Part A Lead in Task 3 Discuss the following questions. 1. What do you think is green living? 2. What does your family do to cut energy use? Cues: healthy, environment-friendly, lifestyle Cues: water, electricity, transport, travel

  11. Part A Lead in Task 3 Discuss the following questions. 1.What do you think is green living? 2. What does your family do to cut energy use? I think green living means a healthy and environment-friendly lifestyle. My family is energy-minded. The used water will be kept to water the plants in our garden; we will use energy-saving lamps and use electric fans instead of air conditioners to reduce electricity consumption. Besides, we also cut the use of private cars and take public vehicles in our daily life.

  12. Part A Text Greening the World Begins at Home In 2004, I was a young college graduate who hoped to change the world. I was convinced that the oil on earth would be used up one day, and that people must notice my calls for energy conservation and green living.

  13. Part A Text To tell the world, I joined forces after graduation with a tiny non-profit organization in Yellow Springs and started to tackle the coming global energy crisis through PowerPoint presentations, websites, filmmaking and conferences. The world didn’t seem to change, but to my surprise, something else did — my hometown.

  14. Part A Text Today, Yellow Springs is well on its way to becoming one of the greenest small villages in the country, and I’m now content to help it become such a model low-energy village, and to record its changes for the larger world. I also learned a lesson along the way — that to change the world we have to first change our communities.

  15. Part A Text The village first decided to start from energy conservation rather than invest in a $2- to $3-million village upgrade because of the climate change and the high future cost of energy. In the meantime, they began to cut energy use by buying hybrid cars, building green homes and improving old buildings. An energy reduction support group, called the 10 Percent Club, meets every month to help villagers cut their personal energy use by 10 percent per year.

  16. Part A Text Yellow Springs now has one of the highest rates of hybrid vehicles in the country, at more than two percent. There are six passive houses complete or under construction, perhaps the highest per capita in the country. And soon the village will have seven straw bale buildings.

  17. Part A Text The village council has committed to green energy. At least two-thirds of Yellow Springs’ electricity will come from renewable energy sources — mostly water, landfill gas and sunlight — by 2015. A new village group, the Energy Board, invests $50,000 per year in reducing public energy use and advises on conservation in the home. This year the group is offering energy audits to all villagers with hopes of reducing the town’s electricity consumption by three percent per year over five years.

  18. Part A Text And villagers are becoming locavores who only eat food produced in local areas. This season yet another community-supported agriculture farm has sprung up just outside of town to feed the community with weekly shares of vegetables — the third in five years. These farms find fertilizers in the waste of Yellow Springs’ local restaurants and coffee shops, which, in turn, get their supplies from the local farms.

  19. Part A Text Communities in Ohio and elsewhere will face the same challenges arising from declining fossil fuel supplies. In being more prepared to take on the challenges, Yellow Springs may lead the way among communities to a lower-energy future. It seems I may help to change the world after all. (467 words)

  20. Part A Text Translation

  21. Part A Text Translation

  22. Part A Text Translation

  23. Part A Text Translation

  24. Part A Text Translation

  25. Part A Text Translation

  26. Part A Text Translation

  27. Part A Text Translation
