  2. Utilities Support Green Building Initiative (GBI) Benchmarking • Utilities and State reps working on benchmarking, include: • Mike Langley – DGS • Steve Prey – Caltrans • Utilities offer Integrated Demand Side Management services for identified buildings

  3. Benchmarking Benefits • Consistent tool across utility service areas • Monthly side-by-side comparisons of building energy intensity (kBTU/sq ft) • Identification of candidates for energy efficiency, demand response or self generation • On-going tracking tool for agency’s building portfolio

  4. Benchmarking Process • EPA’s ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager to determine GBI metrics (kBTU/sq ft) • 2003 – 2015: Automatic upload of monthly meter data • Buildings served by multiple utilities included

  5. Data Transfer & Storage • Utilities need State’s authorization to release meter data to EPA’s ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager • PG&E has confirmed that EPA database is secure for transmission and storage of confidential data • PG&E has successfully uploaded test data using new Unix-based XML utility – first time EPA has allowed non-Windows based upload

  6. Next Steps • Data release authorization for identified State buildings – In Progress • Start the upload of monthly data from 2003-now for identified State buildings by 12/31/06 • Further automation and enhancements by State, Utilities and EPA in Q4-06 and 2007

  7. Planned Tool & Report Enhancements • Show other units (kWh, therms, lb stm) with kBTU and cost displays • Provide grouping by Facility, Dept, Agency, Utility and State • Provide group totals b • Provide graphs comparing energy use by building type, year or other factors

  8. Utility Benchmarking: California State Buildings Questions?
