Use the Export Wizard • The Export Wizard is a Fireworks MX feature to help you optimize your file before exporting it. • The Wizard will ask you some questions and then suggest file types and optimization settings to you. • You can also specify a suggested file size, and the Wizard will use that size when determining optimization settings.   4. Export Wizard dialog boxes The figure on the left is the first Export Wizard dialog box. You can set the suggested file size in this box. The middle figure is the next step in the Export Wizard. In this case, “The web” option is selected. The figure on the right contains the analysis results. Click the Exit button to open the Export Preview window. Optimizing and Exporting – Lesson 6

  5. The Export Preview window This figure shows the Export Preview window. The top-right panel shows the image with suggested settings for GIF format. Use the Optimize panel • In addition to the Export Wizard’s suggestions, you can specify your own optimization settings in the Optimize panel. • When using the Optimize panel, you should always first determine which type of file you want to export, such as GIF or JPEG. • The options presented in the Optimize panel vary from file type to file type. • The Optimize panel has preconfigured color palettes you can select from for some file types. After selecting the file type you want to export, choose a color palette for the file. Fireworks MX has predefined color palettes set up for some file types, tailored to the strengths and characteristics of that file type. Export a GIF image • GIF images are usually used for line art and images with solid color. • They can contain transparent areas and are frequently used for animations. • The Optimize panel has 10 different color palettes you can choose from for GIF images. • GIF images are restricted to a maximum of 256 colors. Export a JPEG image • JPEG images are used to export photographs and artwork with gradations or millions of colors. • JPEG format files cannot have transparent areas or be used to create animations. • JPEG files do not have color palettes in the Optimize panel. • The JPEG compression scheme looks at your image and removes information, which can cause a loss in quality. You can set the level of quality for the image compression in the Optimize panel. Optimizing and Exporting – Lesson 6

  10. The JPEG Optimize panel This figures shows the Optimize panel for a JPEG image. There are additional optimization settings available on the Options menu. One JPEG option you can use is Remove Unused Colors, which creates a smaller file with the least number of colors. You can also choose Interlaced, which will show a low-resolution version of the image as it starts to load and gradually transition to a full-resolution image as the download completes. Preview your document in the workspace • Fireworks MX allows you preview your images before you export them. • The Preview tab allows you to see how your images will look in a Web browser, using the optimization settings you have chosen. • You can even preview rollover and navigation behavior plus animation. • You can split the Preview window into two or four panes and compare multiple optimization settings side by side.   12. The Preview window Click the Preview tab at the top of the document window. This figure shows an image on the 4-Up tab of the Preview window. You can click on and change the settings for any of the displayed images. Optimizing and Exporting – Lesson 6

Use Quick Export • The Quick Export feature provides you easy access to common options for exporting to some other application. • Click the Quick Export button and select the application to which it should be exported. • This feature uses the settings on the Optimize panel, so be sure to optimize your image first.
