  1. Energy Conservation Creating a Healthy Environment For Tomorrow, and Saving Money for Education Today

  2. “We do not inherit the earth from our parents, we borrow it from our children” – Chief Seattle

  3. Contents: 1. Energy 2.Types of energy 3.Energy conservation 4.Conservation of energy leads to?? 5.Why to conserve? 6.world’s energy 7.Energy conservation in India. 8.How conservation helps us? 9.What can we do to conserve? 10.What else can be done to conserve? 11.Conclusion

  4. Energy Energy can neither be generated nor it can be destroyed. It can only be converted from one form to another. For example, in a room heater, electrical energy is converted to the thermal energy. Turbine converts mechanical energy stored in steam to electrical energy.

  5. Types of Energy Energy can be broadly divided into two categories- • Renewable Energy • Non Renewable Energy

  6. Renewable Energy Renewable energy can be generated continuously practically without decay of source. E.g.- • Solar Energy • Wind Energy • Geothermal Energy • Hydro Energy practically

  7. Non Renewable Energy Non renewable energy cannot be generated again and again, e.g. energy generated from combustion of fossil fuels, energy from coal and gas etc.

  8. Energy conservation Energy conservation refers to efforts made to reduce energy consumption. Energy conservation can be achieved through increased efficient energy use, in conjunction with decreased energy consumption and/or reduced consumption from conventional energy sources.

  9. Conservation of energy leads to… Energy conservation can result in increased financial capital, environmental quality, and human comfort. Individuals and organizations that are direct consumers of energy choose to conserve energy to reduce energy costs and promote economic security

  10. Why to Conserve? • We have limited fuels available on earth. • Our demand for energy is increasing day-by-day. • It is possible that someday, most of fuels will be exhausted, and we will have to switch over to alternate energy.

  11. Limited Fuels At present consumption levels- • Crude oil will last only for 40 years. • Gas will last for 60 years. • Coal will be finished in nearly 200 years. • Ever thought of life without oil and gas?

  12. Recycling is an excellent way of saving energy and conserving the environment. • Did you know that: • 1 recycled tin can would save enough energy to power a television for 3 hours. • 1 recycled glass bottle would save enough energy to power a computer for 25 minutes. • 1recycled plastic bottle would save enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for 3 hours.

  13. Energy Conservation

  14. Turn off tap while cleaning your teeth, shaving or washing your face. You can waste can up to 9 litres a minute by just letting the water pour down the sink. Take a short shower rather than a bath could save you up to 400 litres a week. If you do have baths, just half fill them. Only use the washing machine and the dishwasher when you can put on a full load. It wastes both water and energy to run only a half full machine

  15. Saving water saves energy

  16. Worlds energy About 20% of worlds energy is generated from coal and about 60% of worlds energy is generated from oil and natural gas. Because of extensive use of fossil fuel, such as coal, oil and natural gas. Energy conservation is the quickest, cheapest and most practical method of overcoming energy shortage.

  17. Energy Conservation in India In India, government has passed “Energy Conservation Bill, 2001” for better utilization of energy and conservation of the same. By this act, it is mandatory for energy intensive sectors to get their “Energy Audit” conducted by accredited energy auditor.

  18. conservation helps us to save our resources how???

  19. energy conservation also helps us to save precious fossil fuel like coal, gas, oil which are used by the generating companies to generate electricity..

  20. What Can We Do? We, the students can do our bit to save energy. We should not waste energy in college or at home.

  21. Always switch off lights and fans while going out of the class. • In computer lab, we should switch off computers before going out of class. • If there are less students in the class, we should sit together so that some fans can be switched off. (NOT IN EXAMS!) In college

  22. At Home • We should not keep light and fan unnecessarily switched on. • we should insist upon purchasing a five star product rather than cheap and energy waster product. • We should not open fridge door frequently.

  23. How will it help? • Take an example: • We replace one 100W bulb with a 13W CFL. • Let us assume electricity is available for Rs. 3.00 per unit, and this bulb is used for 6 Hours a day. • The annual saving would be….

  24. Power Saving • Power saved: 100W-13W = 87W =87W X 6 Hours X 365 Days =17520 WH =17.520 kWH or Units =Rs. 52.56 Say Rupees 50 per one bulb replaced.

  25. So, • Remember to replace light bulbs with CFLs so electricity could be available for more time. • Always buy 5 starred electric products as it consumes less energy.

  26. What Else can be Done? We should discuss energy conservation with our friends and tell others how can we reduce energy consumption.

  27. Conclusions on Energy Conservation • Energy conservation has saved the need for many power plants and fuel imports. • It has also avoided CO2 and environmental pollution. • Much has been done, but much more can be done

  28. Sooo what have you decided??? Conservation…right??? Conserve energy from this day…

  29. Thank you…
