  4. 5th INTERNATIONAL MEETING Pisa, 24/2/2015 • According to the mentioned definitions we can identify • 3 elements charcterizing the Smart City: • Utilization of networked infrastructure (including ICT) to improve economic and political efficiency and enable social, cultural, and urban development; • Business-led urban development; • Social sustainability ( social cohesion and a sense of belonging) and environmental sustainability (ecological and green implications of urban growth and development). Smart cities are expected to dramatically improve their citizens’ quality of life, encourage business to invest, and create a sustainable urban environment.   6. 5th INTERNATIONAL MEETING Pisa, 24/2/2015 • To create a Smart City we need three types of spaces: • Physical Space (which corresponds to the inventiveness and creativity of the city) • Institutional Space (which includes the social capital and collective intelligence of a city population) • Digital Space (which includes public broadband communication infrastructure and digital technologies.   7. 5th INTERNATIONAL MEETING Pisa, 24/2/2015 • In conclusion a Smart City: • Is a forward-looking City in the areas of economy, people, governance, mobility, environment and lifestyle tending to Urban innovation; • Is a means to information access, bridging digital divide, lifelong learning, social inclusion, higher quality of life; • Involves investments in human and social capital, in traditional and modern communication infrastructure, participatory governance and engagement of citizens, technological, organizational and policy innovation.   9. 5th INTERNATIONAL MEETING Pisa, 24/2/2015 • Objectives of Smart City Initiatives: • Carbon reduction and neutrality • Achieving energy efficiency • Leveraging ICT to develop niche industries such as those relating to multimedia or knowledge-based industry • Attaining the highest quality living environment for residents • Developing green areas within the city • Developing information infrastructure accesible to all • Achieving economic growth and quality of life simultaneously • Ensuring social harmony among different groups of residents

  10. 5th INTERNATIONAL MEETING Pisa, 24/2/2015 How can we create a Smart School? • Economy: • Investments in ICT communications infrastructure • Investments in other friendly environment infrastructure • Energy: • Use of solar panels • Reduction of heat loss • Energy usage reduction • Participatory governance: • Engagement of students also through ICT and parents • Engagement of neighbours and citizens (e.g. unemplyed, retired peole) • Environment: • Aesthetic value • Minimize the amount of waste • Recycling and waste separation • Green space outside • Adoption of organic food in the school canteen • Avoid food waste • Water management • Mobility: • Less congestion out of the school • Less CO2 emissions • Self-sustainability
