  3. History and Development • The following scientists provided evidence for Cell Theory. • Robert Hooke • Hans and Zacharias Janssen • Anton van Leeuwenhoek • Matthias Schleiden • Theodor Schwann • Rudolph Virchow

  4. Robert Hooke • Known as “English Father of Microscopy” • Observed pieces of cork under a microscope. • Coined the word “cell” • “cell” means little rooms in latin

  5. Hans and Zacharias Janssen • Dutch spectacle makers • Credited with the creation of the first microscope and telescope.

  6. Anton van Leeuwenhoek • Known as the “Father of Microscopy” • 1673: Looked at pond scum under the microscope and discovered small organisms that he called animalscules or small animals (Protists) • 1676: discovered bacteria

  7. Matthias Schleiden • German botanist • Discovered that all plants are made of cells • Directly contributed to the development of Cell Theory

  8. Theodor Schwann • German zoologist • Concluded that all animals are made of cells. • Directly contributed to the development of Cell Theory.

  9. Rudolph Virchow • German pathologist • Known as the “Father of Pathology” • Discovered that all living cells come from other living cells. • Directly contributed to the development of Cell Theory.

  10. The compound microscope was used by later scientists and essential to the development of Cell Theory.

  11. 3 Parts of Cell Theory • All organisms are made of cells. • All existing cells are produced by other living cells. • The cell is the most basic unit of life.

  12. Cell Theory Timeline - Assignment • Include all 6 scientists. • Label the timeline with the date and the scientist’s name. • The earliest date should be on the left of the timeline and the most recent date should be on the left. • Include the contribution of each scientist beside/above/below their name. • Be sure your spacing shows a reasonable approximation of the amount of time that elapsed between dates.
