  2. Roof problems in general are bad enough but a bad roof installation just aggravates everything, speeding up their onset. Keep in mind the following to know how to catch a bad installation:

  3. INCORRECTLY INSTALLED SHINGLES • Shingles not flat on roof • Bumpy, lumpy, or curled shingles • Voids or gaps beneath the shingles’ bottom edges • Overlapping shingles • Exposed roof underlayment .

  4. BADLY NAILED SHINGLES • Shingles not lined up evenly • Shingle cutouts not aligned straight up and down • Butted joints not lined up horizontally • Butted joins not snugly fit • Nails ¡n self-sealing strip • Nails placed too high or too low on shingle • Exposed fasteners • Over-driven nails: nail heads too deep • into a shingle

  5. BADLY NAILED SHINGLES • Flashing not installed under roof valley • Underlayment visible outside of roof edges • No step flashing where side walls are ‘located • Caulk is used, but no flashing

  6. FAULTY SHINGLES • .Not enough adhesive to seal down • Thin shingles • Warped shingles • Blistering shingles (e.g. shingles bubbling under the sun)

  7. IMPROPER GUTTER INSTALLATION • No drains or splash blocks • No flashing at eaves • Incorrect or defective pitch (leads to water pooling ¡n the gutter) • Bad downspout placement (can cause poor drainage) • Wrong-sized/undersized gutters (can’t sufficiently accommodate water volume when it rains)
