  2. Chapter 7Summary In this chapter, it looks back to the days at the Wreck Centre and how Larry LaSalle becomes a key part in Francis’s life. At the beginning of the chapter Francis’s depression leads to him and Francis becoming friends. Larry teaches Francis to play Table tennis and makes him the star of the Wreck Centre.

Key quotations. “There was nothing in my world that was worth looking at” ‘He showed me how to stand: alert, leaning forward, knees bent slightly, paddle in my right hand, level with my belt’ “Saw his narrowed eyes. They were suddenly inscrutable, mysterious.” So Cormier shows that Larry is one of a kind.

  4. Significant issues During this chapter Francis often searches for Nicole hoping she would turn up. Larry tells the pair of them, Francis & Nicole that are special. ‘I’m not supposed to play favorites , Francis, but you and Nicole are special to me’. At the end of the chapter marks the start of Americans joining in World War 2.

Always full of Praise for Francis and Nicole and helps them train. Table tennis – for Francis The dance, Follies and Fancies for Nicole + Larry The War

  6. Chapter 8Summary In this chapter Arthur Rivier and Francis have a deep conversation about the war and Arthur finds out who Francis really is.

  7. Key quotations ‘ Nobody talks about the war’ “We weren’t heroes. The strangler and his scrap-book.” “I want to talk about it, my war,” he cries ‘God, but I was scared, Francis. I messed my pants. One day, running across an open field, so scared I shit my pants’

  8. Significant issues Arthur finds out who Francis is. The reader gets to see how hard it was to recover from the grim experiences of the war.

  11. Chapter 9 summary Larry LaSalle telling everyone about enlisting in the war to fight against the Japs. People from Frenchtown began to manufacture materials and essentials for the war effort. Men, Women and children were getting involved. In this Chapter Francis also goes on a date with Nicole

It was on the radio…’
