  1. The Olivet Discourse Matthew 23:29-39; Matthew 24:1-3 .

  2. Mat 23:29-39 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous, (30) And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. (31) Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets. (32) Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers. (33) Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?

  3. (34) Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city: (35) That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar. (36) Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.

  4. (37) O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! (38) Behold, your house is left unto you desolate. (39) For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

  5. Mat 24:1-3 And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to shew him the buildings of the temple. (2) And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down. (3) And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?

  6. Three Questions • “…when shall these things be?” • “…and what shall be the sign of thy coming?” • “…and of the end of the world?” • Futurism teaches that these questions are not synonymous. • All views agree #1 is speaking about 70 AD. • We will see they are synonymous.

  7. QUESTION ONE • Mat 24:1-2 And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to shew him the buildings of the temple. (2) And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down. • “when shall these things be?” • All viewpoints agree this refers to 70 AD.

  8. Titus of Rome • Titus marched into Jerusalem and destroyed the temple in 70 AD. • Beginning April, A.D.70, Forty Years to the Weekfrom the Crucifixion of Christ. The temple was burnt August 10, A. D. 70, the exact same day and month on which it had been burnt by the king of Babylon

  9. “and what shall be the sign of thy coming?” • This second question is believed to be future according to Futurism. • Let us compare scripture with scripture. • Luke recorded the same discussion of the Olivet Discourse as did Matthew. • Luke rephrased the same statements.

  10. Mat 24:2-3 And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down. (3) And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the SIGN of thy coming, and of the end of the world? Luk 21:6-7As forthese things which ye behold, the days will come, in the which there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down. (7) And they asked him, saying, Master, but when shall these things be? and what SIGNwill there be when THESE THINGS shall come to pass?

  11. In other words, His coming would be when “these things” come to pass! • When the temple stones would be thrown down. • Mark 13:2-4 And Jesus answering said unto him, Seest thou these great buildings? there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down. (3) And as he sat upon the mount of Olives over against the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately, (4) Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign when all these things shall be fulfilled?

  12. Both Mark and Luke reported the SIGN concerned the time when temple stones would be thrown down. • Matthew’s reference, therefore, of the SIGN OF JESUS’ COMING also refers to the time when the stones would be thrown down. • JESUS WOULD COME IN WRATH! • Jesus Cursed Jerusalem. • So he would come in fulfillment of that curse.

  13. Mat 23:37-38O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! (38) Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.

  14. But did not “Titus” Come?

  15. Oftentimes, God used heathen armies to judge Israel when they sinned. • Isa 10:5-6O Assyrian, the rod of mine anger, and the staff in their hand is mine indignation. (6) I will send him against an hypocritical nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.

  16. But God said He Judged Jerusalem • Isa 10:12 Wherefore it shall come to pass, thatwhen the Lord hath performed his whole work upon mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the stout heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high looks. • And He would then punish Assyria.

  17. God Orchestrated The Affair • Nebuchadnezzar invaded Israel. • But God claimed responsibility. • Isa 42:24-25Who gave Jacob for a spoil, and Israel to the robbers? did not the LORD, he against whom we have sinned? for they would not walk in his ways, neither were they obedient unto his law. Therefore he hath poured upon him the fury of his anger, and the strength of battle: and it hath set him on fire round about, yet he knew not; and it burned him, yet he laid it not to heart.

  18. He Came, Though None Saw Him • Deu 33:2And he said, The LORD came from Sinai, and rose up from Seir unto them; he shined forth from mount Paran, and he came with ten thousands of saints: from his right hand went a fiery law for them. • With Angels. • This is Old Testament history. • SAINTS means SANCTIFIED ONES. • A SACRED thing or HOLY thing.

  19. Jesus is the God of the Old Testament • Mat 26:64-65Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. (65) Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy.

  20. High Priest Knew Terms Jesus Used • 2Sa 22:12And he made darkness pavilionsround about him, dark waters, andthick clouds of the skies. • Psa 104:3 Who layeth the beams of his chambers in the waters: who maketh the clouds his chariot: who walketh upon thewings of the wind: • Psa 97:2Clouds and darkness areround about him: righteousness and judgment are the habitation of his throne.

  21. ONLY GOD CAME IN CLOUDS! • For that reason, the High Priest shouted BLASPHEMY. • Had Jesus spoken of something alien, such as the resurrection, the High Priest would not have called blasphemy.

  22. PROBLEM TEXTS • Mat 16:28Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom. • They would not die before He came! • Not talk about about transfiguration in next chapter. • That was only a week later! • They were not that old that the chances of them surviving necessitated Jesus’ words that some of them would still be alive by then!

  23. Taste of death is not speaking spiritually about hell, as though the disciples might physically die but not taste spiritual death and see Him come 2000 years later. • As we noted, He told the LOST HIGH PRIEST… • Mat 26:64-65Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.

  24. Mat 10:23But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come. • “YOU” • He spoke to those men. • About their day. • Only makes sense if destruction in 70 AD was His coming in judgment using heathen Rome as He formerly used heathen Assyria and Babylon. • SOME comings of Jesus refer to RESURRECTION and SOME OTHERS to 70 AD destruction.

  25. “and of the end of the world?” • Third question deemed future, as though end of PLANET or WORLD CIVILIZATION. • The SIGN of the second question, though, pointed to this as well. • Sign of coming AND end of world. • We already noted His coming is synonymous with “these things” being destroyed. • WORLD is from Greek “AION”

  26. “WORLD”: Strong’s Concordance • G165 • ahee-ohn' • From the same as G104; properly an age; by extension perpetuity (also past); by implication the world; specifically (Jewish) a Messianic period (present or future): - age, course, eternal, (for) ever (-more), [n-]ever, (beginning of the, while the) world (began, without end). Compare G5550. • We derive the English term EON from this Greek word.

  27. AN AGE WOULD END • Note Jesus’ terms: • Mat 23:31-32Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets. (32)Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers. • A cup was being filled, bit by bit, with every righteous person slain in the earth. • Guilt would fall upon someone. • Israel was accused of FILLING the cup to the brim.

  28. Never before was ANYONE guilty of FILLING THAT CUP. • What an unprecedented accusation! • Israel sinned many times before. • Many prophets were wickedly slain. • But NEVER was anyone, including Israel, accused of the guilt for ALL the shed blood!

  29. Mat 23:34-35, 37Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city: (35) That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar. (37) O Jerusalem, Jerusalem…

  30. Identify the Great Harlot • Rev 18:24And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth. • Mat 24:35 That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth,… (37) O Jerusalem, Jerusalem. • JERUSALEM! • Two parties cannot be guilty of ALL of any one thing. • JESUS IDENTIFIED THE HARLOT! Heed Jesus' Words or Traditions of men?

  31. End of an Age? • Since Israel was guilty of sins and iniquities many, many times… • Even to the extent of being bound in Babylon for 70 years! • And Northern Israel captive in Assyria! • NEVER was Israel accused with the guilt of all the murder of righteous people on Earth! • The disciples knew AN AGE MUST BE ENDING.

  32. The disciples considered the people living all around them BEING THAT GUILTY. • Imagine their thoughts! • Wrath of God heaped up for generations to be poured on the people of THEIR DAY. • Mat 23:36Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation. • THAT kind of wrath would fall in their day!

  33. Mat 21:9 And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest. • The day He rode into Jerusalem, he was rejected. • From that point on, He spoke about Jerusalem’s loss in parable and direct statements.

  34. Until You Return to Praise Me • Mat 23:38-39Behold, your house is left unto you desolate. (39) For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. • What a monumental change was to occur in THAT DAY. • Mat 21:43Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.

  35. Another Nation, Aside from Israel? "YOU" • 1Pe 2:9But yeare a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: • THE CHURCH!

  36. Different Issues? • This issue would not even leave Jesus’ mind! • Mat 24:1-2 And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to shew him the buildings of the temple. (2) And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.

  37. Futurists claim the 3 questions regarded 70 AD, and the far-off future at least 2000 years later. • WHAT DID JESUS SAY TO MAKE THE DISCIPLES ASK ABOUT SOMETHING THOUSANDS OF YEARS IN THEIR FUTURE? • NOTHING! • He spoke about DOOM in THEIR DAY. • Unprecedented guilt upon THAT generation. • And He even spoke of it when the disciples tried to change the subject about the beauty of the temple! • All that was on their minds was THAT WRATH OF THEIR DAY!

  38. ~"YOU"~ Those Disciples! • Mat 24:4-9 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. (5) For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. (6) And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these thingsmust come to pass, but the end is not yet. (7) For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. (8) All these are the beginning of sorrows. (9) Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake.

  39. In the chapter speaking from Temple Destruction to the Coming of the Son: • Mat 24:34 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all “these things” be fulfilled. • ALL must include the TEMPLE DESTRUCTION. • When was the TEMPLE destroyed? • 70 AD. • All must occur before 70 AD, in one generation… despite what tradition has taught!

  40. … • Mat 24:34 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all “these things” be fulfilled. • Luk 21:6-7 As forthese things which ye behold, the days will come, in the which there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down. (7) And they asked him, saying, Master, but when shall these things be? and what sign will there be when these things shall come to pass?

  41. WHAT ABOUT SUN AND MOON? • Mat 24:29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

  42. SUCH A THING COULD ONLY BE A ONE-TIME HAPPENING. • Recorded also in Revelation 6, as the 6th seal. • Rev 6:12-13 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; (13) And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind. • ONE STAR would obliterate the earth. • John was not seeing meteorites. • THE STARS OF HEAVEN – all of them.

  43. OLD TESTAMENT INSTANCES • Isaiah 13:1, 10,13 - BABYLON'S FALL. • Ezekiel 32:7-8 - EGYPT'S FALL • Isaiah 34:4-5 - EDOM'S FALL.

  44. BABYLON • Isa 13:1The burden of Babylon, which Isaiah the son of Amoz did see. • Isa 13:10For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine. • That did not literally happen when Babylon fell!

  45. EGYPT • Eze 32:2 Son of man, take up a lamentation for Pharaoh king of Egypt, and say unto him, Thou art like a young lion of the nations, and thou [art] as a whale in the seas: and thou camest forth with thy rivers, and troubledst the waters with thy feet, and fouledst their rivers. • Eze 32:7-8And when I shall put thee out, I will cover the heaven, and make the stars thereof dark; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not give her light. (8) All the bright lights of heaven will I make dark over thee, and set darkness upon thy land, saith the Lord GOD. • Never literally happened

  46. EDOM • Isa 34:4-5And all the host of heaven shall be dissolved, and the heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll: and all their host shall fall down, as the leaf falleth off from the vine, and as a falling fig from the fig tree. (5) For my sword shall be bathed in heaven: behold, it shall come down upon Idumea, and upon the people of my curse, to judgment. • Never literally happened. • Was a giant sword literally bathed in Heaven? • To come down on a nation?

  47. RULERS • Gen 1:16-17And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. (17) And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, • FLAGS of the world use stars, sun and moon. • Kingdoms and rulers. • DOWNFALL OF A KINGDOM indicated by sun turning black and moon to blood!

  48. SON OF MAN COMING • Mat 24:30And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. • 2Sa 22:11-12And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly: and he was seen upon the wings of the wind. (12) And he made darkness pavilions round about him, dark waters, and thick clouds of the skies. Figurative

  49. HEAVEN AND EARTH? Creation Language • Mat 24:34-35Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled. (35) Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. • Isa 51:16 And I have put my words in thy mouth, and I have covered thee in the shadow of mine hand, that I may plant the heavens, and lay the foundations of the earth, and say unto Zion, Thou art my people.

  50. CONTRAST OF COVENANTS • You would think God created the entire heaven and earth when He made Zion His people. • But THAT is the language God used. • It denotes an ENTIRE COVENANT PEOPLE. • Jesus meant that Old Covenant settings would all pass away. • New Covenant people, living by JESUS’ WORDS, never pass away.
