  1. Christopher Columbus Awards 1. Homework packet due Wednesday We’ll correct it in class 2. What is research?

  2. Christopher Columbus Awards • Today we are going to focus on finding background information regarding your topic. Here are your general guidelines: 1. You need 1 typed page of research for your projectSize 12 font – double-spaced – standard margins 2. You need 3 sources cited for this page – 1 source needs to be an interview with a person knowledgeable with your topic.

  3. Christopher Columbus Awards • What is Research? Which of the following sentences shows that research has been done: • Our group thinks that wind power should be used because it is good for the environment • According to the FDA, 28% of kids between 8 and 13 are considered obese. • The Gypsy moth is really bad because it kills plants and is a pest.

  4. Christopher Columbus Awards • Opinion or Research? Tell me what is wrong with this ‘research’ • Our project is about the lockers in school. They are too small to fit backpacks and backpacks are really heavy. Heavy backpacks are causing back problems in students because sometimes there are 4 heavy books in a backpack. If lockers were twice as big we wouldn’t have to carry so many books around.

  5. Research… • So…how do we figure this out?

  6. Research… • Research should share facts and data that others have discovered. Research helps prove that your project problem is one that should be fixed or solved.

  7. Research… • Your research should be summarized in your own words unless you use quotation marks and cite the original source. No plagiarism! • “According to”….could become your favorite phrase

  8. Research… • Your paper needs 3 sources. • 2 of these sources may be internet or book / magazine sources, but one has to be from an interview with an expert. • This interview should be in person, by phone, or via an e-mail. Include the date of the interview in your sources.

  9. Research… • Paper – size 12 font / double spaced / one full page. • Sources – 3 sources / 1 personal interview. • Due…Monday, October 17th
