Breadbasket Coloniesp. 210 • The Dutch, from Netherlands and Sweden, began settlements in their colony of New Netherland • People from different countries were welcomed by the Dutch, however Jews were not allowed to work certain jobs or freely practice religion. • The English settlers arrived later.

  3. New Netherland Becomes New York • Peter Stuyvesant was appointed to help solve troubles in New Netherland. • King Charles II of England declared war against the Dutch, but the Dutch refused to fight and gave up their land. • New Netherland was split into present-day NewJersey andNew York in 1664.

  4. New Jersey • Land was sold at a low cost and the Quakers, a religious group, were the first to start a colony in New Jersey. • Quakers were often treated poorly. They hoped to find a refuge, or safe place, in New Jersey so they could worship and live as they pleased.

  5. Pennsylvania and Delaware • William Penn was the proprietor, or owner, of what is now Pennsylvania. • Penn wrote a document called the Frame of Government of Pennsylvania which provided a legislature called the General Assembly to make the laws for the colony. • Penn later became the owner of Delaware and they too were granted their own General Assembly.

  6. Market Towns • The Great Awakening, a movement that called for a rebirth of religious ways of life, spread through the English colonies during the 1730’s and 1740’s. • The Middle Colonies: • New Jersey • New York • Pennsylvania • Delaware
