  1. VOCABULARY & OBSERVATION DRAWING Daily warm-up

  2. VOCABULARY The vocabulary word with definition will be written at the top of the white board each day. Learning art related vocabulary will assist you in comprehension of instructions for your projects.

  3. OBSERVATION DRAWINGPURPOSE • Practice • makes anything easier. • builds confidence. • improves your skills.

  4. THINKING & HESITATION If you don’t know where to start, consider using the skeleton method. If you are reluctant to start the process, scribble or practice on another page for a minute to get going.

  5. OBSERVATION RULES • Look carefully at the edge of the object being drawn while the pencil moves. • As your eyes move along the edge, so should your pencil move along the paper. • Draw Lightly – no heavy pressure on the pencil. Ghost lines distract from your drawing. • No erasers – just add another line. • Erasers are OK after it is finished, but practice work with extra lines is fine.

  6. LOOKING AT THE OBSERVATION Focus on the shapes that make up the object.

  7. SIZE OF THE OBSERVATION ITEM The size of the observation will vary, but your observation drawing should always fill the space.

  8. VALUE & SHADING Objects, surface, and background should consist of different values. Classroom lighting is not adequate for proper shadow display, but attempt them.

  9. TEXTURE & DETAIL Textures can be simulated with your pencil. We are completing quick observations, so detail will sometimes be more abstract.

  10. DAILY VOCAB./OBSERVATION SET-UP Turn your page portrait style, then draw lines to separate the page into six (6) equal boxes. Write your daily vocab. in the box to the left along with the date. Complete your observation drawing in the corresponding box to the right.

  11. OBSERVATION CONCENTRATION • Work three to five minutes doing slow focused careful observation. • Focus requires not speaking or being distracted by other’s talking. • Since not everyone arrives to class at the same time, be considerate of others working as you arrive or complete your own work. • No questions will be considered for an answer until this "devotional" is over.

  12. WHY OBSERVATION DRAWING? • Drawing from observation is very worthwhile for several reasons: • Everybody wishes they could draw better. • Drawing develops the right brain. • Drawing builds self-confidence. • It gets us weaned from dependence on copying.

  13. GRADES • Observation drawings are graded based on: • Size – sketches should fill the drawing space • Participation – no points when absent • Accuracy – sketch should reflect item drawn • Complete – no points for no work • Effort – everyone is at different levels, and graded based on the effort they apply towards their work ability

  14. GRADES • Vocabulary grades are based on: • Completed as written on board. • Legible penmanship.

  15. HAVE FUN Observation drawing is a chance for you to explore your drawing abilities. Everyone can draw – don’t compare your abilities to anyone else’s. Anyone who spends time drawing, will draw at a higher level – the same as anything else. Any skill requires PRACTICE.
