  2. Origins Cuban music is of mostly European and African origin. Many immigrants from Spain and slaves from Africa migrated to the small island, bringing their musical heritages with them.

  3. Dancing is a huge part of Cuban culture. These are some of the dances and folk songs brought from Spain and Africa. • Zapateo • Fandango • Retambico • Minuet • Gavotte • Mazurka • Waltz

  4. There was also a surge of Chinese immigrants into Cuba in the 19th century. They brought instruments like the corneta china and other reeded instruments to the island.

  5. The African slaves who came to the island brought one of the biggest parts of their culture with them: percussive instruments and ideas about rhythm. At first, there were about 50 types of drums.

  6. Bongos Today, there are three kinds of drums that have survived in Cuba. Congas Batás

  7. Percussion is generally paired with song and dance in Cuba, as with the African tradition.

  8. Dances Some of the most important dances in the Cuban culture are the bolero, the rumba, the conga, the and salsa cubana.

  9. The guitar is the biggest contribution to Cuban music from the Spanish.

  10. Since the introduction of technology, Cuban music has become the most popular type of world music.
