  1. 混相流シンポジウム2013 Geometrical effects on spray performance of a twin-fluid atomizer and its capacity of CO2 capture二流体式噴霧器の形状が噴霧性能に及ぼす影響とそのCO2吸着能力 Jiafeng Yao1, Shinji Furusawa2, Akimaro Kawahara1, Michio Sadatomi1 1Kumamoto University, Japan 2Japan Marine United Corporation

  2. Background - Some kinds of Atomizers Plain-orifice [Lefebvre, 1989, Atomization and Sprays] Simplex Most twin-fluid atomizers employ the kinetic energy of a flowing air-stream to shatter a liquid jet or sheet into ligaments and then drops. Dual-orifice Spinning disc Pre-filming airblast Generally, higher spray performance needs more complex structure. Effervescent

  3. Background-Sadatomi & Kawahara’s twin-fluid atomizer Compressed air is supplied to the inlet P2: Negative Pressure Water is sucked automatically Mist is generated and sprayed (Atomizer patented by Sadatomi & Kawahara, 2012) Essence of this atomizer: When the pressurized air goes through the orifice, its velocity is increased due to the contraction of the orifice, then negative pressure is produced.

  4. Introduction-Background CCS (Carbon capture and storage) [http://baike.baidu.com/view/17816.htm] Several kinds of methods from CCS: Membrane, adsorption, absorption, cryogenic, carbon extraction, biotechnology, energy conversion.

  5. Experiments-Motivation 1. Geometrical effects on spray performance * LO: Large sized orifice type atomizer; MO: Middle; SO: Small. 2. Apply the mist to absorb CO2 Water Droplet Absorption CO2 CO2

  6. Experiments-Facility Water level in the tank is the same as the generator Tubes are used to test spray distribution

  7. Experiments-CO2 capture (3) Remove the film (2) Release CO2 balloon CO2 (1) Spray mist for 5 min. (4) Test CO2 concentration

  8. Results-Different opening area ratios Different opening area ratios (b2) influences the water sucking force and droplet size distribution. Drop down quickly 80 90 83 Evaporation The atomizer with the opening area ratio of 0.429 has the largest water suction performance and can spray the largest diameter range of effective droplets for gas absorption.

  9. Results-Test of orifice shape Orifice shapes influences the Sauter mean diameters (SMD). 4-Notch orifice can spray mist with the smallest Sauter mean diameter but difficult to manufacture.

  10. Results-Comparison of two sized generators Two sized generators with the same proportion are compared. Double use of SO4.58-20.5 Pneumatic power consumption: Two small sized atomizers can spray mist with the same liquid flow rate but only consume pneumatic power at one fifth of that middle sized one. So double use of the small one is recommended.

  11. Results-Spray angle expansion for absorption Three factors influencing absorption performance [Dimiccoli et al. 2000]: Average diameter of drops Spray angle or cone spray amplitude Average flight time of the drops (SMD 46.7 mm  25.7 mm) (24° 111°) (Prolonged) propeller

  12. Results-Application to CO2 capture Mist sprayed by small sized generator was used to absorb CO2. T: 24.5 ºC; P: 75.73 mmHg 23 % A typical picture of droplets The mist sprayed by the small sized generator with b4d25 propeller can effectively reduce the indoor CO2 concentration to the harmless level of human health.

  13. Conclusion • The atomizer patented by Sadatomi & Kawahara was studied and applied to CO2 absorption. • The atomizer with the opening area ratio of 0.429 has the largest water suction performance and can spray the largest diameter range of effective droplets for gas absorption. • 4-Notch orifice can spray mist with the smallest Sauter mean diameter but difficult to manufacture. • The middle sized generator can produce stronger water suction force and mist generation rate, but consumes much more power. So double or multi-use of the small one is recommended. • The mist can effectively reduce the indoor CO2 concentration within the harmlessness of human health.
