Manifest Destiny. Definition-the belief or doctrine, held chiefly in the middle and latter part of the 19th century, that it was the destiny of the U.S. to expand its territory over the whole of North America and to extend and enhance its political, social, and economic influences .

Manifest Destiny • Definition-the belief or doctrine, held chiefly in the middle and latter part of the 19th century, that it was the destiny of the U.S.to expand its territory over the whole of North America and toextend and enhanceitspolitical, social, and economicinfluences. • Who came up with the slogan- John l. O’Sullivan in 1845.

Oregon Country • Where is it- huge area of land between the pacific ocean and the Rocky Mountains north of California. • States that came from it- Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming. • Treaty it was from- Treaty with Great Britain. • Oregon Trail- 2,000 miles, Mississippi Valley, Great Plains and Rocky Mountains

  3. Texas • Main Idea- Texas won their independence from Mexico and asked to be admitted to the United States. • Conflict over Texas- 1803 • Steven F. Austin- Ask the Mexican government to confirm his father’s land grant. • What did the Mexican government decree and how did Americans feel?-They stopped all immigration from the United states. • President of Mexico in 1833- Santa Anta. • What was the Alamo and what happened there in 1836?- The Alamo was a church. In 1836 the Alamo fell. • When did Texas declare their independence? Where?- In March 2, 1836. Washington on the Brazos. • The commander in chief of the Texas forces After it declared its independence- Sam Houston.

  4. Texas • Battle of San Jacinto: When- April 21. What was the battle cry?- “Remember the Alamo”, “ Remember Goliad”. What happened at the end of the battle?- Santa Anna Signed a treaty that recognized the independence of Texas. Why did Andrew Jackson refuse to annex Texas?- The nation of another slave state would upset the balance of slave and free states in congress. When did Texas become a state?- December 29, 1845. Who was the president of the United States when Texas became a state?- John Tyler.

War with Mexico • What states are included in the territory?- New Mexico, Arizona, Navada, Utah, an parts of Colorado and Whyoming. • What was the Santa Fe trail and what land/rivers did it cover?- Mississippi, Arkansas river, Rocky Mountains. • How did trade with New Mexico increase effect with United States?- More people settled there. • What had influenced culture in Califonia?- Missionarys • How did John C.
