  4. Objectives • Describe the major relief, recovery, and reform programs initiated by Roosevelt in the early days of his administration

  5. Objectives • Identify critics of the New Deal and their proposals for coping with the Depression

  6. Objectives • Identify and describe the major programs of the Second New Deal • describe the controversy involving Roosevelt and the Supreme Court

  7. Objectives • Identify the effects of the New Deal on American society and culture in the 1930s • identify the long-term effects of the New Deal

  8. Activity one • At the computer the students will look at the software America’s Presidents Series: World Wars, Prosperity, and Depression - Presidents during and between the two World Wars. Looking at Presidents Wilson-Truman and write a page dealing with what they would have done if they were President

  9. Activity two • They will watch a video on Roosevelt: The Fireside Chats and the New Deal, a video that chronicles the period from 1932 to 1938, introducing the main points of Roosevelt’s New Deal and its significance on the American economy then they will discuss it in groups and record what they felt was most important

  10. Activity three • The students will read excerpts from the book To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee. It is a book about a six year old girl who narrates events in a small Depression era Alabama town when her father, a lawyer, defends a black man accused of raping a white woman. Then as a class we will discuss it.

  11. Activity four • In groups the students will debate how Roosevelt used the radio to fight the Depression and how his use of the radio was different from traditional methods of gaining support for presidential programs

  12. Activity five • In groups the students will discuss what environmental problems the U. S. faced in the 1930s as well as what the CCC did to help the environment

  13. Activity six • Each group will take the role of a different person and write letters to President Roosevelt criticizing the New Deal. The people they will portray are: Al Smith, Huey Long, Father Coughlin, Dr. Francis Townsend, and Upton Sinclair

  14. Activity seven • As a class we will create a chart listing the legislation of the New Deal, what programs it created, the responsibilities of these programs, and whether they strengthened or replaced earlier New Deal programs. They will put this in their notes for review for the chapter test.

  15. Activity eight • In groups the students will compare the impact of the Depression on American Indians and Mexican Americans and discuss why they think these two minority groups received different treatment

  16. Activity nine • In groups the students will discuss what the message and style of movies were in the 1930s and compare them to what today’s messages are in movies. Also what they tell you about the hopes and values of today’s Americans.

  17. Activity ten • As a class we will discuss FDR’s decision to slash spending in 1937, and create a chart on how cuts led to a rise in unemployment and a fall in the stock market, this will go in their notes for further review for the test.
