  2. BARACK OBAMA, CNN interview, Nov. 20, 2006 • I think the American people, at their core, are a decent people. I think that we still have prejudice in our midst but I think that the vast majority of Americans are willing to judge people on the basis of their ideas and their character. And in the case of the presidency, I think what is most important is whether the American people think that you understand their hopes and dreams and struggles and whether they think that you can actually help them achieve those hopes and dreams.

Ethics is the STUDY OF MORALITY Ethics Morality • Subfield of philosophy that studies the morality of human conduct; what is considered right or wrong, good or bad. • Ethical or unethical conduct • Refers to the part of human behavior that can be evaluated in terms or right or wrong. • Moral or immoral

  4. Components of Consistant Ethical Behavior • James Rest – Leader in research on personal ethical development • Developed 4 basic components that to a person maintaining consistent ethical behavior.

  5. Are you Ethical?

Moral Sensitivity • The ability to recognize the presence of ethical issues, questions, and temptations. • Moral sensitivity is not something you should take for granted; not everyone has it. • In the business world, it is not unusual to see a career end for an ethical misdeed that he/she didn’t recognize as a matter of right or wrong. • Not enough to have just this quality – you may still not know what to do about it once you encounter it.

  7. Ethical Judgement • The ability to decide on the best or right course of action – to be able to make a responsible ethical judgment. • It’s important to be able to determine the best course of action in a situation. • But that’s not enough all by itself. Many times in life people know the right thing to do, they just don’t want to do it.

  8. Ethical Motivation • Have the personal disposition to do the right thing; you have to have a strong inner desire to be a good person and to live a good life. • You have to want that more than wanting the short-term rewards that unethical decisions can sometimes bring

  9. Ethical Character • Having the self-discipline and courage to follow through in difficult situations and to do what you know you should, even under extreme pressure.

  11. K.I.S.S • Identify the problem • What is the ethical dilemma? • Identify the values at stake • What are you gaining by acting ethically or unethically? • Evaluate the options available to you • Choose the best option • Wrong is wrong, even if you don’t get caught
