  1. The black & white colobus MONKEY The black & white colobus monkey By: Ella Hebron!

  2. Did you know? #1 • Black-and-white colobus are predominantly black, displaying the least white fur out of all the black-and-white colobus monkeys. Markings occur in the form of a broad, snowy white beard and bushy white facial fringe, a distinctive white strip on the thigh and a white slightly-tufted tail . It is thought that the black and white patches help break up the body outline in the shadowy forest canopy .

  3. INFO ON YOUNG COLOBUS MONKEYS • Infants are born with a completely white natal coat, and begin to change colour at around three months. • The body is slender, with a long tail, and prominent rump callosities (bare patches of tough thickened skin on the buttocks) . Like other African colobus, the thumbs are reduced to small nubs, but the remaining fingers are long and form a hook-like hand well adapted to gripping branches

  4. DID YOU KNOW? #2 • Black-and-white colobuses (or colobi) are Old World monkeys of the genus Colobus, native to Africa. They are closely related to the brown colobus monkeys of genus Piliocolobus. The word "colobus" comes from Greek κολοβόςkolobós ("docked"), and is so named because in this genus, the thumb is a stump.

  5. THEIR HABITAT! • Colobuses are herbivorous, eating leaves, fruit, flowers, and twigs. Their habitats include primary and secondary forests, riverine forests, and wooded grasslands; they are found more in higher-density logged forests than in other primary forests. Their ruminant-like digestive systems have enabled these leaf-eaters to occupy niches that are inaccessible to other primates.

  6. INFO ON COLOBUS MONKEYS #1. • Colobuses live in territorial groups of about nine individuals, based upon a single male with a number of females and their offspring. Newborn colobuses are completely white. Cases of allomothering are documented, which means members of the troop other than the infant's biological mother care for it.

  7. INFO ON COLOBUE MONKEYS #2 • Colobuses are important for seed dispersal through their sloppy eating habits, as well as through their digestive systems. They are prey for many forest predators, and are threatened by hunting for the bushmeat trade, logging, and habitat destruction. • There are five species of this monkey, with at least eight subspecies.
