About the University of Cologne • The University of Cologne is arranged in 6 faculties. • About 43.000 students are currently enrolled. 10 % of those are international students. • The University of Cologne offers different additional skills for career orientation and qualification for several target groups. Those are in cooperation with central course guidance. • The Faculty of Human Sciences have 6,500 students. • The Career Service »S&A« is integrated into the faculty of • Human Sciences at the Department of Economic Education. • The Career Service S&A arranges interdisciplinary career orientation and business qualification offers.   4. Introduction The main function of university is scientific based education. But concerning the specific study and career advancement of the students there is also a need for business preperation. Apart from specific education Universities should also offer occupational qualification and closeness to practice. New study relevant fields of activities should be developed and the carreer entry should be more tightly focused. Since 1989, the career service S&A at the Department of Economic Education has been offering the opportunity to supplement their studies with career orientation and practical training, to students of the University of Cologne, enrolled in economic education and humanities. About Career Service S&A • The career service S&A is an opportunity for students of the University of Cologne to supplement their studies with career orientation and practical training. • Work tasks are: • counseling and advising • career planning and decision making • job search strategies • employability skills • The career service cooperates with employers who participate in job fairs, on campus interviewing, resume referral and related programs. • S&A financed by the Faculty of Human Sciences of the University of Cologne. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Career Service S & A University of Cologne

Semester Job Market Seminar 2 h course every week Job Market Seminar: In the Job Market Seminar participants learn about their career prospects based on their individual profiles and the current job market. In addition, students develop key qualifications and prepare themselves for a professional internship.

Semester 10 month - Group Projects (in addition with companies) Group Projects: Students organise groups to work on career-related topics for two semesters. At the end of the second semester, each group presents its results. Participants practice project teamwork, learn about group processes, and try out various techniques, such as group work moderation and organising presentations with the help of advanced visual and communicative methods.

Speaker Series: Speakers from the business and non-profit sectors come to talk about different occupational fields and other job-related topics. Through discussions with the speakers, participants receive practical information about careers and work.

Semester Elective 1 Elective 2 Electives: During the S&A-programme, students are required to expand and deepen their knowledge of business economics and computer-related applications. In addition, they must select and attend courses in two other career- or market-related areas. These include, for instance, evaluation, organisational development and marketing.

  14. Modules 1. Semester 1x internship 2. Semester 8-week professional internship: Each participant is assigned a professional internship individually tailored to his or her skills and interests. The internship offers students the chance to realistically assess job demands in production or service industries, learn about the organisation and operation of a company, and test the skills they have learned in the program. In some cases, the work is quite intensive, going beyond a single internship. Many graduates have gone on to use the internship as a basis for their diploma thesis.
