  3. WHO IS MANAGER: A manager is a person who is responsible for a part of a company, i.e., they ‘manage‘ the company. Managers may be in charge of a department and the people who work in it. In some cases, the manager is in charge of the whole business. For example, a ‘restaurant manager’ is in charge of the whole restaurant.

  5. FUNCTIONS OF MANAGER: • PLANNING: • In the planning stage, managers establish organizational goals and create a course of action to achieve them. During the planning phase, management makes strategic decisions to set a direction for the organization. Managers can brainstorm different alternatives to achieve the objective before choosing the best course of action. While planning, managers typically conduct in-depth analysis of the organization’s current state of affairs, taking into consideration its vision and mission and evaluating what resources are available to meet organizational objectives. • ORGANIZING:  • After a plan is in place, a manager needs to organize his team and materials according to his plan. Assigning work and granting authority are two important elements of organizing. • STAFFING:  • After a manager discerns his area's needs, he may decide to beef up his staffing by recruiting, selecting, training, and developing employees. A manager in a large organization often works with the company's human resources department to accomplish this goal.

  6. FUNCTIONS OF MANAGER: • LEADING:  • A manager needs to do more than just plan, organize, and staff his team to achieve a goal. He must also lead. Leading involves motivating, communicating, guiding, and encouraging. It requires the manager to coach, assist, and problem solve with employees. • CONTROLLING:  • After the other elements are in place, a manager's job is not finished. He needs to continuously check results against goals and take any corrective actions necessary to make sure that his area's plans remain on track.

ROLES OF MANAGER: • INTERPERSONAL ROLE: • FIGUREHEAD: Symbolic head; required to perform a number of routine duties of a legal or social nature. • LEADER: Responsible for the motivation and direction of employees. • LIAISON: Maintains a network of outside contacts who provides favors and information. • INFORMATIONAL ROLE: • MONITOR: Receives wide variety of information; serves as nerve center of internal and external information of the organization. • DISSEMINATOR: Transmits information received from outsider or from other employees to members of organization. • SPOKESPERSON: Transmits information to outsiders on organization’s plan, policies, actions, and results; serves as expert on organization’s industry.

ROLES OF MANAGER: • DECESSIONAL ROLE: • ENTREPRENEUR ROLE: • Searches organization and its environment for opportunities and initiates projects to bring about change. • DISTURBANCE HANDLER: • Responsible for corrective action when organization faces important, unexpected disturbances. • RESOURCE ALLOCATOR: • Makes or approves significant organizational decisions. • NEGOTIATOR: • Responsible for representing the organization at major negotiations.

MANAGER SKILLS: • TECHNICAL SKILLS: • The ability to apply specialized knowledge or expertise. • HUMAN SKILLS: • The ability to work with, understand, and motivate other people, both individually and in groups. • CONCEPTUAL SKILLS: • The mental ability to analyze and diagnose complex situations.
