  2. IF YOU WERE COMING IN THE FALL • What might this title tell the reader about the poem? • Are there any particular words that stand out or provide clues?

  3. If only centuries delayed, I'd count them on my hand, Subtracting till my fingers dropped Into Van Diemen's land. If certain, when this life was out, That yours and mine should be, I'd toss it yonder like a rind, And taste eternity. But, now, uncertain of the length Of time's uncertain wing, It goads me, like the goblin bee, That will not state its sting.

  4. Vocabulary • Spurn – to reject with disdain or contempt • Van Diemen's Land – The old name for the island Tasmania where convicts were sent • Goblin - is a legendary evil or mischievous creature • Goad – Something that urges or stimulates into action

  5. Rhyme scheme: ABCB Tone: mixture of happy/melancholy

  6. If I could see you in a year, I’d wind the months in balls, And put them each in separate drawers, Until their time befalls What is her purpose for separating each one?

  7. Interpretation: If she had to wait centuries it would feel like being isolated on an island serving a prison sentence Interpretation: If she knew that she would spend eternity with the one she loves, she would be willing to die right now to be together forever.
