  5. 3. Second Continental Congress votes to form an army under GeorgeWashington • Battles at Lexington & Concord • American Revolution Begins

  6. 4. France enters the war in 1778 • France wants to weaken England • Combined forces result in American victory La Fayette

  7. 5.By approving the Articles of Confederation, states create a weak national government • States need a plan for a central gov’t, but want to protect their own authority • National Gov’t set up, but powerless to govern

  8. George III • 60 yr. reign as King of England • Wanted to assert his leadership • Unbending discipline of Colonies led to Revolution

  9. Treaty of Paris • Signed Sept. 3, 1783; officially ended the American Revolutionary War

  10. Popular Sovereignty • All the power of a government comes from the people • Locke/Rousseau

  11. The Constitution • Created in 1787, and ratified by the first 13 states in 1789 • Replaced the weak central government of the Articles of Confederation with a more powerful one.

  12. Checks & Balances • A system whereby branches of the same government share power equally and limit the powers of fellow branches simultaneously

  13. Federal Republic • A system of governing where power is shared between the Federal (national) government and State governments • 10th Amendment to the Constitution

  14. Bill of Rights • First 10 amendments to the Constitution • Insisted upon by the “Anti-Federalists” • Outlines limitations of the Federal Government in regards to personal liberties
