  2. Be clear in your mind about your own sexual values and attitudes. • What do you think about… • sexually active teenagers? • encouraging abstinence? • encouraging contraception use? (protection) • Were you sexually active as a teen? • How do you feel about that now? • How does your past experience influence what you say to your children about these issues?

  3. Talk with your children early on about the impact and consequences of having sex. • Be honest, open, and respectful • Use television or movies • What do you think and why? • Two-way conversation / NOT a lecture! • Clear up wrong information they already have

  4. Here are the kinds of questions kids say they want to discuss: • How do I know if I’m in love? Will sex bring me closer to my boyfriend/girlfriend? • How will I know when I’m ready? Should I wait until marriage? • How do I tell my boyfriend/girlfriend that I don’t want to have sex without losing him/her? • What should I say when he/she pressures me to have sex?

  5. Supervise and monitor your children and teenagers. • Establish rules and curfews • Ask questions • Where? • Who? • Any adults? • Who is in charge until you get home?

  6. Know your children’s friends and their parents. • Parents with similar rules and values • Arrangement to meet parents • Discuss common rules • Welcome your children’s friends

  7. Discourage early, frequent, and steady dating. • Set rule on dating age • Do NOT deviate from rule • Inform child of rule early

  8. Take a strong stand against your daughter dating a boy a lot older than she is. And your son getting serious with a very young girl. • Can lead to risky situations • Can cause power struggles • Set limit for age difference

  9. Help your teen see his or her options for the future that are more attractive than early parenthood. • He or she has a bright future • Set goals and ways to achieve those goals • Discuss difficulties if get pregnant as a teen or get a life threatening STD

  10. Let your children know that you value education. • Instruct child to take school seriously • Graduating is not optional! • Discuss grades and behavior • Talk to teachers, coaches, counselors
