  1. Today’s Guiding Question What do car accidents and convergent plate boundaries have in common?

  2. Remember: Convection currents cause the plates to move in different directions Convection currents Crustal Plate Movement

  3. Tectonic Plate Facts • The crust is broken in 15 tectonic plates 3. Some plates have oceans on them- oceanic! • 2. Some plates have continents on them- continental

  4. 4. CONTINENTAL CRUST= LESS DENSE 5. OCEANIC CRUST= MORE DENSE 6. SUBDUCTION= WHENEVER A PLATE SINKS

  5. Ms. K’s Friend ‘Connie’ Connie and I met in science class in 7th grade. We were best friends- like omgbfff! However we are both equally stubborn and after awhile we began to bump heads. We started workin’ each other in the hall, and finally we collided in a fight causing both of us to have swollen bumps on our heads. They were as huge as mountains!

  6. Convergent Boundaries Collide causing Mountains to form

  7. CONVERGENT BOUNDARIES What is happening?: plates are colliding! Diagram:   Memory Trick:Convergent Collides 3 types Continental-Continental Continental-Oceanic Oceanic-Oceanic

  8. 3 types Continental- Oceanic -More dense oceanic plate sinks -Oceanic plate melts -Crust is destroyed -Volcanoes form Oceanic-Oceanic -Olderplate sinks -Crust is destroyed -Trenches and Islands form Continental-Continental -Equally dense -Plates ‘crumple’ -Mountains form!

  9. SUBDUCTION- WHENEVER A PLATE SINKS!

  10. Dating show: Plates style! Directions: Complete each section of reading and answer the Convergent Boundary questions in your notes • DO NOT TALK TO ANYONE BUT YOUR PARTNER • NO THROWING STUFF • REMAIN IN YOUR SEAT • LEARN LEARNLEARN

  11. Today’s Guiding Question: How do a DJ and a moving walkway have anything to do with plate boundaries?!

  12. Plate Tectonic Key Vocabulary • Rift- a crack or crevice in the earth • Sea-floor spreading- a crack in the ocean floor where magma is leaking out • Mid-ocean ridges- underwater mountains that form at divergent boundaries

  13. Ms. K’s Friend “Divisha” During 8th grade a new girl came to my middle school- her name was Divisha. Everyone liked Divisha- I mean EVERYONE! She took over the 8th grade! Soon I was in competition with her. My friend group became Divided, torn between following me and following her. Finally the rift occurred- my real friend group moved to one side of the cafeteria and Divisha’s moved to the other, leaving a trench and mountain of hate between us

  14. Divergent Plates Divide forming Rifts, trenches and mountains

  15. DIVERGENT BOUNDARIES What is happening?: plates are moving apart Diagram: Memory Trick:Divergent Divide

  16. DIVERGENT BOUNDARIES On continents: 1. Rift valleys form In oceans: • Trenches form • Mid-ocean ridges form • New crust is created due to sea floor spreading

  17. 4. CRUST ‘CDDC’ Created at Divergent Destroyed at Convergent

  18. Listen- Hypothesize: What do you think is going on?! WHY!!?!?!

  19. Ms. K’s Friend “Transfasia” During my freshman year of high school there was this girl Transfasia that wanted to be my friend sooo badly. I mean she was borderline a stalker! Everyday she would bump into me in the hallway just to say hi. Finally I got fed up with it!!! She bumped into me, so I shoved her hard back. It started a ‘mosh pit’ in the hall way and everyone was bumping someone around! It looked like an earthquake at hit!

  20. Transform Boundaries Bump past each othercausing Earthquakes

  21. TRANSFORM BOUNDARIES What is happening?: plates are scraping Diagram: Memory Trick:DJ Transform Causes: EARTHQUAKES!

  22. Brain Break • Japan Earthquake in 2011

  23. Fun fact! • Virginia had an earthquake in 2011…. • BUT WAIT?! Virginia isn’t along a fault line! • Sometimes there are thin areas (rifts) in the crust that are weak that can ‘slip’ like a transform boundary

  24. Scientist Says! • Convection currents • Convergent • Subduction • Pangaea • Transform • Divergent

  25. Dating show: Plates style! Directions: Complete each section of reading and answer the Boundary questions in your notes • DO NOT TALK TO ANYONE BUT YOUR PARTNER • NO THROWING STUFF • REMAIN IN YOUR SEAT • LEARN LEARNLEARN

  26. Finito? (finished) Work on the independent practice questions • DO NOT TALK TO ANYONE BUT YOUR PARTNER • NO THROWING STUFF • REMAIN IN YOUR SEAT • LEARN LEARNLEARN
