  1. Study Cross-Cultural Psychology in the UK/Spain Special Topics in Social Psychology (400:162g): Culture and Social Behavior 3 credits May 19 – June 3, 2010

  2. About me • Social psychologist • At UNI since 1997 • Did study abroad in UK and Spain as a student • Research on the emergence of culture, cultural differences, and prejudice

  3. Class prerequisites • Intro to Psychology • Technically, research methods and social psychology are required (if it were a land-based class), but one or both of those requirements may be waived if you would benefit from the class—talk to me about it.

  4. Course requirements • 4 pre-trip meetings • Short assignments pre and post trip • Discussions based on textbook and readings • Visits to UK and Spanish universities and to sights of interest • Project

  5. Textbook: • Smith, P. B., Bond, M. H., & Kâğitçibaşi, C. (1999). Understanding social psychology across cultures: Living and working in a changing world. London: Sage. Grading scheme: Project(proposal; IRB; data collection; final paper) 50% Participation(thoughtful, informed group discussion contributions; positive, on-time participation in activities; cooperative group interactions) 25% Pre-trip and on-trip activities (assignments, presentation) 25%

  6. Cross-cultural research project • Work alone or in pairs or groups of 3 • Design your own project examining a social behavior or response • Write proposal and get IRB approval in US • Collect data in several locations in US, UK, and Spain • Analyze data and draw conclusions—due after return • Present it at a conference later if you want!

  7. Tentative Itinerary--UK • In London, visit: • Tower Bridge • St. Paul’s Cathedral • Museum of London • Imperial Museum • Freud Museum • Changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace • Hyde Park

  8. Optional evening events • Pub outing • Ghost tour • Royal Shakespeare Company production

  9. Day trips • University of Sussex, Brighton • Research presentation • Visit to pier and beach • University of Kent, Canterbury • Canterbury Cathedral • Lunch at university with students and professors • Research presentation

  10. Overnight trip Devon • Research presentations • Boat outing with UK students • Walk the coastal trail

  11. In all UK & Spain locations • Time for project data collection • Interactions with students and faculty • Cultural assignment in London and Barcelona to increase confidence in international travel

  12. Spain • In Barcelona, visit • ParcGuell • La SagradaFamilia • Las Ramblas • Picasso Museum • University tour

  13. Evening events • Walk on Las Ramblas • Fountain show at Montjuic

  14. Overnight trip (tentative) • Granada and Jaen • Visit the Alhambra, a Moorish palace • Meet with students at the University of Jaen

  15. Tentative costs • This is a HIGH estimate—b/c Study Abroad doesn’t want you to get hit with a surprise, and not knowing what the dollar will be doing by then, etc. It will most likely be less, maybe even much less. • $2600 + tuition + international airfare ($950 for those who’ve already bought) • Includes everything except some meals, optional things you may want to do, and souvenirs. • Doesn’t have to all be paid at once.

  16. How do I sign up? • Fill out the Study Abroad application online at their website (look under England, then Psychology in England and Spain). • Pay the Study Abroad application fee to their office. • That saves your space! • If you have questions about the course, ask me. If you have questions about how to sign up, financial aid (scholarships available!) talk to Study Abroad.

  17. Hope to see you there!!
