  1. Essay Writing Body Paragraphs

  2. Body Paragraphs • The part of your essay in which you provide evidence and make your argument is called the body. • Generally, it is a good idea to provide at least one paragraph for each of your main points. • So, if you have two main points, you should write at least two paragraphs.

  3. Two Parts to a Body Paragraph • A topic sentence • This introduces what the paragraph will be about. Ex.: One reason that classic video games are educational is that they introduce young gamers to art.

  4. Two Parts to a Body Paragraph • Evidence • This is where you back up your main point with specific evidence. Ex.: For example, many gamers in the 1970s were first introduced to Greek philosophy, not by reading the philosopher, Plato, but by playing games on the computer system, PLATO. My first introduction to Shakespeare was when I played The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (1992). There is a witch in this game who quotes “Bubble, bubble toil and trouble,” a classic line from Shakespeare’s play, Macbeth.

  6. Body Paragraph #2 Each body paragraph follows the same structure. • Topic Sentence (Pt. II) Ex.: A second reason that classic video games are educational is that they provide a fun way to practice reading.

  7. Body Paragraph #2 • Evidence (Pt. II) Ex.: Unlike modern games, the classics did not have voice acting. When playing a game, gamers had to read each piece of dialogue and instruction. For plot-heavy games like The Legend of Zelda and Final Fantasy series, gamers would actually find themselves reading the equivalent of an entire novel by the time they completed a game.
