  1. MET Update Nicole Harris REFEDS@TNC2014

  2. WHAT IS IT? • METADATA EXPLORER TOOL. • Intended to be a pretty management tool to show big numbers to important people – nothing more scientific than that. • Has been used (yay!). • It can obviously do a lot more – question about how much effort we should put in here? • Where does this fit in larger picture of federation-stats? • GEANT proposal on uber-RAPTOR • Whizzytools like WAYF examples • Brook’s detailed federation catalogue / eduGAIN service catalogue • Relationship to monitoring tools

  3. WHAT NEXT? • Get it on to a stable platform. • And….?

  4. FEDERATION OPERATOR PRACTICE Nicole Harris REFEDS@TNC2014

  5. WHY? • Clear feedback from FIM4R group – how do I understand the processes used to create trust? How do I know which federations do what? • Rise of interfederation – do my processes match your processes? • Requirements – eduGAIN requires a metadata registration practice statement but no template. • First step on LoA journey – cannot get to first assurance profile without first understanding where we are now.

  6. WHAT? • Simple template process inline with the GEANT Identity Federation Policy Template work lead by Marina. • One way of looking at the documents is that policy deals with WHO can be in a federation and WHAT they can do, whereas the FOP deals with HOW the federation ensures these rules are kept. • Currently divided in to four practice statements: • Metadata Registration Practice Statement; • Key Management Practice Statement; • Assurance Practice Statement; • Monitoring Practice Statement.

  7. WHERE ARE WE? • First draft Metadata Registration Practice Statement available for comment. • Introduction and Applicability; • Member Eligibility and Ownership; • Metadata Format; • Entity Eligibility and Validation; • Entity Management. • Borrows strongly from work by Peter Schober and Ian Young for their respective federations. • https://refeds.terena.org/index.php/FOP. • Comments being gathered on the wiki for changes.

  8. NEXT? • Finish consultation on Metadata Registration Practice Statement. • Work on Key Management Practice Statement. For an idea of what this might look like see: https://refeds.terena.org/index.php/REEP_Policy. • Move through the stack in turn – likely to take some time.
