  3. Question 1: What type of support do airline websites provide for making online reservations? Do they provide a way to actually pay for the ticket over the Internet? If so, would you feel comfortable with your credit card number traveling across the Internet? Why or why not?

  6. Question 2: Airlines save money through e-ticketing because fewer people are needed to check and track passenger tickets. Do airlines have and social or ethical responsibilities to provide these displaced workers with other jobs? If so, can airlines expect to save as much money through e-ticketing?

  8. Question 2:Displaced Workers??? • Should the airlines find work for displaced workers? • Could e-ticketing create more jobs in different areas?

  9. Question 3: Delta’s use of a smart card for ticketing is a variation of a smart card described in chapter seven. How could airlines use real smart cards to help passengers during check-in? Some people would have to store several thousand dollars on a smart card. Would you feel comfortable with that much money on a smart card? Is it any different than having a credit card with a large credit line?

  10. Question 3:SMART CARDS • Description • Contains a microchip which keeps track of all transactions. • How could airlines use smart cards to help passengers? • Possible disadvantages?

  11. Question 3:SMART CARDS: Are they too much trouble? • Not yet standardized • many cards vs. one card • credit card, debit card, both? • Some say, they are “just fancy credit cards”.. • Imagine if you lost your wallet!

  12. Question 4: What about people with computer phobias? If all airlines use technology for ticketing and boarding, what will happen to people who don’t want to use technology? Will airlines always have to have mechanisms in place for boarding passengers with physical tickets?

  13. Question 4:I hate computers!Can I still FLY? • SHORT TERM • We will still use tickets, • ..but they will be phased-out over time! • LONG TERM • Technology will take us to ticketless travel! • Learn to love the computer, or you won’t be able to fly.

  14. Question 5: Do you think Web online reservation sites could negatively impact travel agents? Visit a local travel agency and see what its employees think the future is for Web online reservations. Also ask them how they plan to stay in business as more travelers use the Web to purchase airline tickets.
