A Deep Dive Into Aromatic Descriptions with doTERRA Essential Oils

Many of us diffuse essential oils to define the environment within the home. Sometimes we want something invigorating, so we go with a citrusy aroma. Other times, we want a calming aroma, so we go with a floral scent. However, some doTERRA essential oils have more complex descriptions, like eucalyptus oil. What do words like herbaceous mean? Here's the answer.

  2. A Deep Dive Into Aromatic Descriptions with doTERRA Essential Oils Who doesn’t love the aroma of their favorite essential oil floating through the home? Many of us diffuse essential oils to help define the environment within the home. Sometimes we want something invigorating, so we go with a citrusy aroma. Other times, we want a calming aroma, so we seek out a floral scent. But as you explore the many delightful doTERRA aromas, there are descriptions that aren’t always obvious. These can be descriptions like “camphoraceous” and “warm.” Many understand what the word “warm” means, in general. But what does it mean when applied to an essential oil? To answer that question, here’s a look at three aromatic descriptions that define many doTERRA®* essential oils. Putting the Herb in Herbaceous The word “herb” is a big clue as to the aroma of herbaceous essential oils. As you might expect, you’ll find this description attached to several aromas that are derived from herbs (though not all). Some people describe it as green, fresh, or earthy, all of which can be accurate. Lemongrass essential oil is one example. Not only does it have notes of citrus, but it also has strong aromatic notes that can be described as green or fresh. These are notes that are invigorating and encourage an environment of awareness. Another aroma that can be

  3. described as herbaceous is tea tree oil. Much like doTERRA lemongrass oil, it too can help support an invigorating atmosphere. Camphoraceous Kicks Things Up a Notch You’ll find several doTERRA essential oils described as both herbaceous and camphoraceous. Oregano oil is a great example; as an herb, it has a decidedly earthy, green aroma, but there’s more depth than that. Camphoraceous essential oils are described as having a scent reminiscent of camphor. But for those who aren’t familiar with camphor, try to think of it as medicinal or clean smelling, with woody and herbal notes. You can get a robust camphoraceous note from eucalyptus oil. It’s not uncommon for the aroma of eucalyptus oil to be described as clean. Who Knew Warm Could Be So Complex? The word “warm” seems straightforward and obvious compared to terms like herbaceous and camphoraceous. But don’t let the perceived simplicity fool you. It’s used to describe doTERRA essential oils with aromas that bring about a sense of warmth or coziness. Another word that is often paired with warm is spicy. It’s not spicy in the sense of “hot,” but aromatically spicy—like the scent that accompanies cooking or baking with spices like turmeric, cinnamon, or cardamom. Like many oils, the aroma of turmeric oil can be appealing based on your personal preferences. doTERRA understands the importance of incorporating different essential oils into your lifestyle and knows that every scent isn’t for every person, such as turmeric oil. They’ve developed creative solutions from turmeric supplements to proprietary blends to help you find the best way to bring a variety of essential oils into your life in a way that best fits your lifestyle. * Registered trademark owned by doTERRA Holdings, LLC.
