  1. Should Parents be able to Choose the Gender of their Babies? Also known as ‘Designer Babies’ Abi Towle 8G

  2. What are they? ‘Designer Babies’ are a process in which the parents of a child can decide the gender and characteristics of the child. Many people argue both for and against ‘Designer Babies’ However, there are occasions where the process is necessary; for instance, if there is an illness in a family that is passed down the female line of the family, then the process is acceptable.

  3. What are the arguments for ‘Designer Babies’? There are many different reasons why people may want to choose the gender and characteristics of their baby. Here are a few examples: - The parents may be strictly religious so need a first-born to be a boy • - There could be a disease passed down the male line of the family • - Every family benefits from having a balance of genders • People argue that the parents have the right to choose because it is their baby, and they are parenting it so should theoretically have the choice. i.e. Judaism:

  4. What are the arguments against ’Designer Babies’? Additionally, there are obviously reasons against Designer Babies; for instance, it is basically destroying a human, which in many eyes, is cruel. Other reasons are as follows: • - Involves destroying human lives • - The parents may regret it, when it is already too late • - Parents should love their child whatever the gender and characteristics • - It could lead to over population of one gender • - It could lead to sexual discrimination • - Destroying what could be perfectly healthy • - Disregarding the rule that humans should all be equal, despite their looks, personality and gender

  5. Opinions of the Public... I interviewed members of the High School for Girls, Gloucester to highlight their varied views on ‘Designer Babies’: ‘ ‘I don’t support designer babies because by changing the gender of a baby, you’re killing a human yet to be, and you should just be happy with the baby you had to start with. If it’s down to religious reasons or medical (for instance, a disease that passes down the male side of the family) then I believe it is acceptable to choose the GENDER, but not necessarily the characteristics. It isn’t needed to choose the gender, let alone the characteristics of a child, just because you want to.’ Emily Davis, 8G

  6. Continued... ‘ ‘I don’t think that it’s right to choose the gender and characteristics of your baby because you should just be happy with what you have made. I don’t agree with it and I think that you should have what’s naturally occurred. I think a lot of it’s to do with religion – many faiths a required to have a first-born son etc. I don’t feel that the natural population needs it, as the process of Designer Babies introduces more of one sex to the world, when it’s easier to simply conceive naturally. My personal belief is that it is immoral; people should simply be happy with the gender they have got. ‘ Mrs A. Bailey, Design/ICT/Yr Leader at HSFG

  7. If you want a first-born son or daughter because of your religion, then the argument is that it would be against your faith to give birth to a daughter. If there is a disease or allergy that passes down one gender of the family, then if it would protect the child it should be necessary. It is basically destroying what is already human, and many people think that that is cruel and unnecessary =I agree = I disagree My Opinion... The process could lead to overpopulation and sexual discrimination of one gender, as there would be more males than females The parents should still love the child, despite the gender and characteristics Being the parents, the mother and father should technically have the right to choose.

  8. Overall, I think that.... • The parents should be happy with what they have BUT • It could mean the child is safe form a certain illness After looking at all the resources, information and arguments for and against ‘Designer Babies’, I have decided that unless it is for a medical reason, parents should not be able to choose the characteristics and genders of their children; they Simply be happy with what they have created. This is for no reason AT ALL
