  3. I. New Deal Critics • By 1934 the Depression seemed to be easing • Less talk of starvation, violent upheaval, or complete economic collapse.

  4. A. Conservatives • Formed the American Liberty League to combat “radicalism” • “There can only be one capital, Washington or Moscow.” • 1934 midterm elections

  5. B. More Public Criticism • Not far or fast enough to end the Depression • LaFollete formed a new Progressive Party • Upton Sinclair - EPIC

  6. C. Huey P. Long • Revised tax codes to make corporations and the rich pay more. • Headed the “Share Our Wealth Society

  7. D. Father Charles Coughlin • Radio priest who mixed prayer with politics. • Called for redistribution of wealth and monetary reform. • National Union for Social Justice

  9. II. The Second New Deal • Proposes new and expanded agencies • Requested $4.8 billion in work relief for the unemployed • Social Security Act of 1935

  10. A. New Labor Legislation • Wagner Act • AKA- National Labor Relations Act • Outlawed blacklisting • Set up National Labor Relations Board • Prohibited “unfair labor practices”

  11. 2. Works Progress Association (WPA) • 1936- employed 25% of the nation’s workforce • Low-paying and temporary jobs • Built schools and playgrounds, repaired bridges and landing fields, improved 650,000 miles of roads

  13. B. Farm Security Administration • Loaned more than $1 billion to farmers and set up camps for migrant workers

  25. V. An End to Reform • 1937- National Income and production reached 1929 levels. • FDR slashed funding for PWA and WPA, cutting 2 million jobs • Led to a recession

  27. B. 1938 Achievements • Fair Labor Standards Act • abolished child labor in most industries • Minimum wage of 40 cents • 40 hour work week • Did not cover domestic work
