The College Board Standards for College Success The College Board Standards for College Success were created with the goal of increasing the number and diversity of students who are prepared to succeed in college and the 21st century global economy by: • Defining the knowledge and skills students need to be successful in first year college coursework. • Providing a model set of standards for rigorous middle school and high school courses that lead to college and workplace readiness. • Providing teachers, districts, and states with tools for increasing the rigor and alignment of courses across grades 6-12 to college and workplace readiness. • Assisting teachers in designing lessons and classroom assessments by clearly articulating the content standards students must meet beginning in grade six to be ready for AP and college level work.

  4. Development of the College Board Standards for College Success (CBSCS) • The CBSCS are anchored in empirical research conducted by College Board and David Conley of EPIC to define expectations of first-year college faculty and high school teachers. • There is a strong correlation between the CBSCS and leading national and international frameworks such as the ADP Benchmarks, NAEP Frameworks, and AP expectations. • The English Language Arts standards define a developmental progression of knowledge and skills in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and media literacy that should be addressed across the curriculum. • The Mathematics standards are course specific: Middle School Math I and II, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra II, and Pre-Calculus. • The Science standards specify what students need to succeed in college level science courses in biology, chemistry, physics, and earth science and will be available in 2009.

Development of the College Board Standards for College Success (CBSCS) Design and Methodology • Four year research and development effort engaging expert Standards Advisory Committees, which included college faculty, middle and high school teachers, curriculum and standards experts, and representatives from national professional organizations. • The College Board conducted extensive reviews of empirical studies and existing exemplary state, national, and international standards frameworks. • The committees identified the English language arts and mathematics and statistics knowledge and skills that college faculty expect of entering freshmen and that students need to be successful on the SAT and AP. • To develop the standards, the committees then mapped back from these college-level expectations to define a pathway of rigorous content knowledge and skills beginning in grade 6 leading to college readiness.

The College Board Standards for College Success: Organizing Structure Standard: Concise statement of content focus The Standard and Objective levels provide an overarching framework for each content area. Using two organizing levels maintains coherence and focuswhile providing sufficient detail. Objective: More detailed elaboration of content and instructional focus Performance Expectation: Detailed performance expectations that support targeted instruction and assessment The performance expectation level defines expected performance in measurable detail.

The College Board Standards for College Success:Mathematics and Statistics: Course and Grade Levels Mathematics • Broken down by courses: • Course-based progression • Mathematics I and II encapsulate the three years of pre-Algebra I mathematics traditionally studied in grades 6-8 into two courses. • Strong emphasis on probability and statistics

College Board Standards and Curriculum Alignment Services • The College Board has developed standards and curriculum alignment services to support the standards review and revision goals established by states or the curriculum alignment goals established by districts. • Using the CBSCS, the College Board evaluates the rigor and alignment to college readiness of the state’s content standards or a district’s curriculum in English Language Arts and Mathematics (Science forthcoming). • Services we provide: • Side-by-side standards mappings • Gap Analyses • In-depth alignment reports including observations and recommendations • General consultative guidance for district curriculum mapping/ alignment and state standards alignment In providing these services, the College Board views itself as a committed partner with states in setting clear and high expectations for all students in order to prepare them for college and 21st Century careers.
